Tbf, AIII judges don't really do any grunt work - their clerks do all the research/writing. They just do bench decisions and "review" orders, LJL

depends; I knew a dude who clerked in CDCA and the judge handled the criminal docket alone which is more than half the work

i clerked on coa; a few times my bench memo basically became the decision; other times judge completely disagreed and rewrote it

maybe the judge i interned for is just lazier, although he chose to handle most of his criminal docket himself (since he used to be a DA)

his clerks legit worked 9 to 5 though, no weekends - clerking can be a sweet gig outside of places like SDNY

also some judges are just sociopaths; i heard a rumor that a judge has an elaborate point system and keeps a scoreboard on display in chambers so clerks know at any given point who is his "favorite"

lol, is it SDNY?

I know certain SDNY judges work their clerks to death - clerks legit work like 70 hours a week and some judges make their clerks get there at 7AM

tbf; all courts have this; if we had a sitting coming up i was doing 70 hour weeks; and we had an en banc sitting which was hell; otherwise i rarely worked beyond 6

in the vast majority of districts, federal criminal work is a joke. the AUSAs give u no-brainer cases on a silver platter and u have to do basically nothing. most doods plead out. the feds don't prosecute cases that aren't open-and-shut, for the most part

we actually sent a case back because the district judge fucked up in every possible respect and the ausa was committing borderline unethical withholding of evidence

And yet Biglaw partners making 3 million in PPP grovel before them and would literally suck their dick to win a run of the mill motion to compel.
