The main thing to do is properly normalize your tables then use Access to run spiffy reports.

MS Access, part of MS Office but no one uses it. Or when they do they focus on how they want the final report to look and try to base the tables off of that, but that's ass-backwards. Gotta gitcho tables right.

Wikipedia has articles on database normalization, with examples of what it is.

Like if you're listing a bunch of different people's results on the same events that each occurred on the same days, then you need to put the events + dates in a separate table from the names + results and give each event a code that is referred to in both tables. Stuff like that. Normalize yo shit. Most n*ggaz ain't normalizin'.

I read lots of posts on database forums and stackexchange questions. The key issue is people focus too much on formatting reports but you need to focus on your table setup and join queries etc. That's where you need to understand normalization. It takes time but then becomes an A ha thing.

I'd assert it's very simple and except for syntax can be picked up in an afternoon, the problem is people are not used to thinking in clean categories, everything is all ajumble.

I much prefer fucking around with spreadsheets to writing, which is 90% of what I do. The dolts at my office don't even know vlookup let alone hlookup, index(match), or the ALMIGHTY SUMPRODUCT.

I'm in Excel all day but my final work product is PowerPoint. I just use Excel to crunch the numbers and then make a deck about what the numbers tell us.

Oh, I also attend meetings. I'll make a big spreadsheet where the rows are all workstreams within a big project, and at the meeting I'll ask everyone for a status update on their part of the project and I'll update the spreadsheet with new info about how the project is going.

then I go make a PowerPoint deck summarizing what's new on the project, which I present to a C-suite exec
