Wikipedia has articles on database normalization, with examples of what it is.
Like if you're listing a bunch of different people's results on the same events that each occurred on the same days, then you need to put the events + dates in a separate table from the names + results and give each event a code that is referred to in both tables. Stuff like that. Normalize yo shit. Most n*ggaz ain't normalizin'. |

The key issue is people focus too much on formatting reports but you need to focus on your table setup and join queries etc. That's where you need to understand normalization.
