Make yourself a good character at the start. Don't be afraid to keep rerolling until you get good stats. It's really hard to build them up.

Get or make an axe asap (many starting conditions give you one) so you can make boards to trade. This is the easiest cheesiest way to get started.

Learn to hunt and track. Kill a deer or elk and just sell all the meat you can't eat before it spoils (basically sell all of it.) Trade from dried/salted/smoked meats and fish. They last forever and take a while to get the stuff to make yourself.

Eventually build a cabin with a fireplace so you can smoke meats, and do so.

Dogs are probably the single best thing in the game. They don't respawn, so note where you find them and come back and buy them all eventually. They're awesome for defending you and can help hunt (though this is tricky and you can lose the dogs.) Give them cool names.

Trap fences are great and eventually you'll have huge ones and be swimming in fresh meat.

The endgame is whatever you want. Get some cows to milk so you'll never starve and to carry your stuff, then kill all the Njerps and claim their villages.

You can also terrorize all the realm and slaughter villages wholesale once you get good.
