English lit fags who TA in exchange for tuition are now going to have the waivers treated as taxable income. The academia scam is coming to a swift end!

a full tution phd is NEVER worth paying for except maybe for econ

it would just mean that anyone who has a genuine interest in research would say "fuck it". yeah bro, just do 3 years as a 45k postdoc chasing the tenure lottery where you'll then start out at 80k (if you're lucky enough to land a tenure track job) and over several decades progress to 130k while 240k in debt

that's to say nothing of people who end up in industry after deciding they don't want to move around the next 6-7 years after a 6 year phd, and bring more knowledge/productivity to the table than your average BS. they too would just say "fuck it" because the salary difference isn't anywhere near enough to overcome 6 years of tuition

You're not paying full tuition, you're only paying TAX on full tuition. STEM degrees are certainly worth at least 30% of the sticker price.

a phd isn't. why bother getting a phd when MS grads get very nearly the same salary bump in 1/3rd of the time? the net expense would be the same and you save four years. it's a comically fucking stupid idea and just another way for the government to perpetuate the student loan scam because phd students would be taking out loans to pay fucking taxes while they "earn" 65k and take home 20.

even 80k in debt is a huge burden to people who want to pursue academia, which pays jack shit relative to all the years/moving invested and the wild goose chase of perusing tenure.

So what are they being taxed on? Sticker price of tuition is stupid. It's very often not the market price.

And is this really all that hard to circumvent? Tuitions often vary among programs. And they can vary based on residency and religious status. So why can't tuition be cheap or free for some grad programs?

Colleges are going to be pressured to pay more to offset the tax hit or else drop their programs. As far as crushing the scam goes this can only be a good thing.
