There are fewer establishments of cultural or social interest per unit area in NOVA cities than there are per unit area in DC. Even the most DC-like of the suburbs, Arlington, offers a surprisingly narrow set of options for eat, drink, entertainment, etc. Reston is entirely chains. Tysons is little more than an enormous corporate park.
While there is a huge difference now, the rate of change is really fast in the NOVA cities. IMO they could become legitimate, appealing cities in the next 20 years. |

Fairfax County is 1.1 million people and the vast majority are not that close to a station. Hell I live in Arlington proper and it's a half-hour walk for me. Now as you approach it on the silver line, you can. That elevation lets you see how many huge buildings there are in a fairly small land area. I was really shocked the first time I rode into Tysons on the train.
The biggest buildings to be built in Virginia are under construction on Rt 7 in Tysons now. |
