A lot of the smaller Midwestern cities, such as Dayton, OH or Toledo, OH

also suburbs of Washington DC, because you can't build real skyscrapers in DC. Tyson's Corner is an impressive skyline.

Arlington's funky set of mini-downtowns created by the Metro system is an interesting "skyline" in its own right, though the buildings mostly top out around 20 stories for now.

Most cities are 2-d - they spread out east/west and north/south. Orange line in Arlington is like a 1-d city.

Yeah, basically the Metro stops Rosslyn, Courthouse, Clarendon, Ballston, and Pentagon City/Crystal City all have heavy development with moderate high-rises (think 15-20 stories) but the turf between them is all suburban-style single-story commercial buildings, garden apartments, and single-family homes.

Here's an image of the Orange Line:

interesting.

so basically when people talk about the people in the "Washington suburbs" - it's really the same people as those in Washington, they just decide to live right by the metro rather than in shithole studios in DC proper?

There's still a yuge difference between the "city" life in Northern VA and the city life in DC. There are fewer establishments of cultural or social interest per unit area in NOVA cities than there are per unit area in DC. Even the most DC-like of the suburbs, Arlington, offers a surprisingly narrow set of options for eat, drink, entertainment, etc. Reston is entirely chains. Tysons is little more than an enormous corporate park.

While there is a huge difference now, the rate of change is really fast in the NOVA cities. IMO they could become legitimate, appealing cities in the next 20 years.

Not necessarily. NoVa is quite vast so the overall number of people overwhelms the people living in high-density zones right by the Metro. Fairfax County is 1.1 million people and the vast majority are not that close to a station. Hell I live in Arlington proper and it's a half-hour walk for me.

are the DC burbs getting more expensive now that DC itself has gotten so built up? or has it had the opposite effect (people moving back to the city making Virginia prices cheaper)?

Not an expert but I'd guess D.C. is only getting more expensive. It's a weird metro though, because the high cost of living is very disproportionately driven by childcare costs rather than just rent.

9% black

10% asian

15% hispanic

it's probably less white now.

They'll change Davis highway but I'm less sure of the rest. Something like 30 streets in Alexandria have Confederate names (including Van Dorn St/metro stop) so changing all of them would be a pretty serious expense and hassle.

Silver line gives a very different perspective on the Tysons skyline. 2-3 years ago you couldn't be a mile away from the edge of Tysons and be elevated enough to get above the tree line. Now as you approach it on the silver line, you can. That elevation lets you see how many huge buildings there are in a fairly small land area. I was really shocked the first time I rode into Tysons on the train.

The biggest buildings to be built in Virginia are under construction on Rt 7 in Tysons now.

first time I went up to Cuse was at night on I81 north. you come over a hill by the indian reservation and all the sudden you see crazy lights like you're approaching a boston or philly or somewhere. Then 81 takes you right through the city, so close to the buildings. Its pretty cool. Its also mostly vacant.

cities that are the de facto capital of a large geographic region sometimes develop that sort of thing despite their size. des moines has c. 700K people in its metro, but its skyline looks like this:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0a/Des_Moines_skyline.jpg/1200px-Des_Moines_skyline.jpg

an extreme example might be yellowknife, which is decently built-up in the city core despite only having 20,000 people.

I remember being baffled when I drove into Yellowknife. I was expecting a standard 20k town, but instead found a fair number of decently tall office/government buildings. It could also just be because the city is a frozen 20 below hellhole in the winter that it's easier to manage keeping basic services/roads running if workplaces are less spread out.

I sometimes wish the twin cities had just one downtown. Could theoretically be a more impressive city in certain respects, including the skyline

OTOH, Minneapolis and St. Paul have very different vibes, which is kind of cool. If it was just meshed together then you would notice more that these cities aren't actually close to anything else.

Why are people naming mid-tier metro areas like Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Columbus, etc.?

That 15-30th ranked metro areas by population group has a pretty standard looking skyline.

You can just add Kansas City, San Diego, Denver, Tampa, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, etc. to the ones previously mentioned.

Probably some beach resort towns? Not that familiar with the US, but I know in Europe and Asia, there are small resort towns that have huge hotels lining the water (e.g. Benidorm)

Benidorm has 30 skyscrapers over 100 meters (similar to San Diego, which is a good 20 times bigger), Myrtle Beach has exactly one, so looks like it doesn't quite compare.
