it was eclipsed by tlc's waterfalls.

I sorta feel like "Best Songs of the 90s" needs to appropriately capture the decade's zeitgeist.

Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" is a really good one as it just captures the feeling of the decade perfectly, as is Smashing Pumpkin's "Disarm" or "1979".

I also really like "Linger" by the Cranberries.

nah. Jeremy only captures the feeling of the early part of the decade. the late 90's resembled the roaring 20's and had nothing in common with lyrics to be found in a teen angst alternative/grunge song.

well, Britney's "baby one more time" was a 90s song, but if someone asked you to to choose a song that reflected the 90s, you probably wouldn't choose that one. it's pretty indistinguishable from the aughts music imo

this is nonsense. there was a recession in the early 90s and Seattle, which is always depressed anyway, produced some very good rock music reflecting its mood. that does not = zeitgeist of a decade

i mean i get what you're saying, and i definitely think there are other musical genres that capture the 90s spirit: gangsta rap, R&B, ska/bigband, britpop, etc.

if someone suggested jump jive and wail, or gin and juice, i'd take no issue with those and think they capture the 90s well, or at least they "feel" 90s.

but the late 90s pop that was really just the precursor to the aughts pop isn't really a good choice imo.

if you had issues with the 1991 release, you will definitely not like 2011 version.

im not sure i could ever pick it out on its own, but side by side the 2011 version sounds like it is playing through a pillow
