My grandmother openly discussed that issue in the few years before her death. She was perfectly healthy but also 88 years old. She would openly remark that she had mixed feelings about being "near the end of her life". It was pretty interesting to talk to her about it. She wasn't terrified, but she was definitely worried about it and thought about it often. She died a few weeks ago after having a massive stroke.

Yeah the old mos have had time to reconcile it, have seen peers die, and generally feel it coming. The cancermos mostly live in denial about being able to beat it. Lots of cancer deaths in my family. All but one were stark raving mad at the end and even the chill one made us bring her to hospital at the 23:47 hour

Thats actually not accurate. She was stoic as hell. Made us bring hr in for a transfusion when it was far too late, and that sucked bc it showed she didn't get it... but after hospice came who got it.

When death came she gave us clues we should leave the room. She was a light sleeper so it made sense to me.

My grandfather checked himself out of the hospital, arranged hospice himself, and then, when he'd said appropriate good-byes, ingested a vial of arsenic he'd stored for that purpose.

Think he tinctured it with opiates. Also, he was more than a little nuts. Likely got cancer in his eighties because decades before he was in the habit of handling radioactive material without proper shielding.

The relatives who have died recently or are close to death were all 90+

They were not really afraid of dying per se - but they did say they were afraid of the process of death itself.

the pain seems hard to take. If you take out the physical discomfort it must be, in its own way, lovely to observe the lights gently going out.

Heard through the grapevine of one who was scared shitless of "those things coming to get me." She also did some fucked up things during life and was repenting a ton right before death.

Death is humbling.
