There are good sociological texts on the social construction of illness, for example, that limit their theories to the ways in which illness is talked about, the way patients seek treatment and the way the profession of medicine is structured. Studying the social construction of illness gives prescriptions for improving care etc.

There are plausible philosophical positions that stake out the possibility that natural kinds are constructs of human minds and the quasi-products of social relationships. At no point do these philosophers say this has any implication for the practice of science.

At no point do level-headed social constructivists claim that sex is a social construct, for example, because that uses the impotent philosophical position to make misguided policy prescriptions.
