for example, some piece of "knowledge" that has for whatever been deemed "necessary" is the distinction between different classical architectural orders (and even here the concept is further simplified to relate solely to columns). so students are taught that there are three different types of columns, and throughout their adult lives they are proud to recall them in front of an audience of their peers. they are now classically trained!
but they don't know anything about the dorians or ionians, up to and including their very existence. it never occurred to the teachers to inform their students of this background knowledge, primarily because the teachers are similarly ignorant. nor were the students grounded in any study of art, architecture, or broader culture for the purpose of placing the various orders in any kind of context whatsoever. such "knowledge" that they have received remains a lonely factoid, related to nothing, useless to all.
