the story of ethiopia is basically the civilized, organized, literate tribes (the amharics, mainly) ruling over and dealing with the burden of under-performing pre-literate tribes. the civilized tribes were outward-looking traders who lived under organized dynastic rule under kings, while the undeveloped tribes were basically what you'd expect.

the amharics are quite proud of the fact that they were slavers rather than slaves, and they get quite annoyed when outsiders criticize them for using a firm hand to keep the lesser tribes in line. they have their own version of the "white man's burden," and believe that they have a special civilizing mission to keep those tribes from destroying themselves and everything around them. the other tribes, of course, find them to be arrogant, but they underperform so badly relative to the amhara that they can't do much about it.
