I think they're all idiots.

Vacuum cleaners are disposable. When they break or don't work as well after 4-5 years, just go buy a new one for $150.

Many of the complaints involve "older customers who lack the will to stand up to grueling sales pitches."[3] The Wall Street Journal records examples where an elderly couple was unable to remove three Kirby salesmen from their home for over five hours; in another example, a disabled woman who had been living alone in a mobile home on $1000/month in Social Security payments and suffering from Alzheimer's disease was discovered to own two Kirby vacuum cleaners, having paid $1,700 for the second one.[3] In 2002, the Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner obtained $13,000 in refunds for 13 senior citizens.[16]

According to the Wall Street Journal, the device "costs more than four times what other top-of-the-line vacuum cleaners do."[3] Kirby compares the price difference to that between luxury and economy cars, yet "luxury-car dealers don't make house calls in trailer parks. But Kirby dealers do."[3] The Kirby vacuum cleaner is "marketed exclusively door-to-door — often to people who can ill afford a $1,500 gadget, but succumb to the sales pitch nonetheless."[3]

My parents bought a Kirby way back when and my dad just recently got suckered into buying another one. The guy kept lowering the price, but instead of calling bullshit my dad said “what a deal!” He paid like $500 or $800. Something ridiculous. Even Dysons don’t cost that much.

Meanwhile my $200 Bissell from 8 years ago still works great.

My grandmother did this in like 1980. They came to the US in 1979 and her first major purchase was some fancy Electrolux vacuum cleaner that cost $800 in 1980. It was a 180 vacuum cleaner and it lasted until 2008. It was so 180 that we bought another one in 2008 when that one finally died. The basic model is still in production and costs the same $800.

The only thing that's changed is the color and the shape a tiny bit. Otherwise they've been making the same model since the 70s and it rocks.

Kirbys actually do have some of the most powerful suction of any vacuum and will last forever. A good buy used from someone who got suckered.

I remember they had some propulsion system where if you pushed it they would do all the work and even though it is heavy as hell it would move easily. It wasn't a terrible vacuum (though the bags were expensive and constantly needed to be changed and hauling it up the stairs was a bitch), just the door to door salesmen were obviously scammers.

We own one, it is heavy as fuck but it is self propelled and our home is a ranch, so no stairs. It has a nice accessory pack that let's you vacuum out your car, shampoo fabrics like your couch, and for an all hardwood home like ours an extension for that as well, etc. Again, used they're a pretty good deal.

Dysons are definitely GC flame. At least Kirbys are industrial as fuck, made in AMERICA, and will last a lifetime.
