I can't speak to polisci. Honestly stem prepared me very well for the abstract thinking and problem solving. Practicing turning that into code still took the better part of a year to do well, and I know I still have a lot to learn.

If you're still in school, the best thing to do is just take a few CS classes and see if you like it. Outside of school I'm sure it gets a lot harder, but the move is probably to try some online classes in core cs concepts like algorithms, data structures, and operating systems on a platform like Coursera.

C++ is harder for everyone just because it's a massive language which essentially has two programming paradigms (shitty C-with-Classes and actually readable modern C++)

You need to be able to understand the old style. A liberal arts fag won’t understand memory management. Better to start with C and get the basics if you don’t have a background.

It's one of the most straightforward things to understand, it's hard because if you inherit a bunch of pre-smart pointer C++ code it will inevitably be lubed up its pert boistinker with bugs.

It's more that some of it is just fucking weird (and hard to really get down pat unless you're regularly coding in C++ or a high powered IQ autodidact who memorizes every rule he reads) than a lot per-se, e.g. the idiosyncrasies of the T&& operator:

https://isocpp.org/blog/2012/11/universal-references-in-c11-scott-meyers

The worst part about C++ is really that nothing ever gets deprecated, so you're unlikely to encounter clean "new C++" code IRL. Places like good trading firms are probably one of the few exceptions, as they target top talent and are constantly iterating their codebases to keep pace.

Good job copping dat $$$ though. If I were you I'd sock away a shitton of money over the next 3-4 years and then move on to doing whatever the fuck you want. You'll have the flexibility (in terms of money saved and people who will hire you, or phd programs if you want to chill). I'm jelly

Still significantly out of the normal range for a top school

I haven’t looked recently but I am highly skeptical that’s Facebook starts people out at 200k.

with the right investments, you will have a much higher NW than doctors will just because you have 10 period head start. it's the time value of money. their future earnings are discounted to the present.

Put everything into index funds and crypto and you will be golden - you might be able to retire by 35

I have SPY too, but I asked exeunt a while back and he recommended not doing SPY

VTI's expense ratio is lower than SPY

VXUS and VTI returns have been better recently than SPY

Fwiw, I also do individiual stock investments. I'm not sure I recommend it though, b/c I'm no expert. For the most part they are shit, except my Alibaba investment has been 180.

I think I averaged around 18% returns for the past year outside of crypto (and this is with some shitty stock investments).

Why are so many CS grads aiming for Goog, FB, etc instead of these quant jobs? Do you have to know any data science/scripting, modeling
