Trump and DB ultimately settled, and part of the deal was that Trump Org. had to pay them a large sum. Trump Org. got this money with a loan from DB to DJT. The question is why would DB still be lending to an individual whose company had stiffed them on hundreds of millions? That's what Mueller is trying to answer.
In the background is the fact that DB's Russia branch had a money laundering scheme to benefit Russia's Kremlin/mafia elite.
The lib wet dream is that the decision to keep lending to Trump is somehow connected to a role Trump played in the money laundering scheme. Some say part of the laundered money was used to buy Trump RE in the US. The theory would be something along the lines of Trump turning a blind eye to all cash Russian buyers so they could park their dirty money in his real estate. Even if he did, is that a crime? I don't know. Maybe if he was promised some benefit in return, i.e. the loan from DB.
All of this is not things I necessarily believe, but if you're wondering what Mueller is after, this is most likely it. |

Second, DB is the only "big bank" that would even touch Trump after all the bankruptcies (which go back way farther), so it's fair to wonder whether any other big bank would let this "happen all the time."
Anyway, I can't think of a better idea for what they're after. But tell me if you know of one. |

Not a finance guy, but perhaps during the financial crisis it seemed like a good settlement for DB to simply loan Trump the money he owes them and earn interest on it instead of fucking around while he finds another source of funding, especially if that would make Trump agree to a higher dollar amount. Just guessing, but the settlement might have made that loan much more difficult to default on than a normal loan so it wouldn't be much risk. |
