im pretty lazy and take shortcuts. but im a decent lawyer and excellent in mediations, etc. how much of calishitlawguru's job is hustling new clients vs. doing legal research, writing briefs, going to trial? i hate the traditional legal work, but enjoy the "business" side of law.

The majority of my job is bringing in business and organizing files/tasks for my paralegals to work on. I do virtually no real legal work. I can't remember the last time I wrote a brief or motion. One of my paralegals drafts all my complaints and discovery now.

Not really. Some minorities actively seek out a Jewish attorney (specifically black clients), but that is pretty rare. I had one client whose e-mail was NAME1488@gmail.com and he hired me even though it came up I was Jewish in conversation.

My last name is not overtly Jewish and I meet like 5% of my clients. Almost all my signups are done over the phone/e-mail.

Why? Almost every client is a personal referral from a former client. They call in, I vet the case, my paralegal takes down all the relevant info, we send them e-sign docs while on the phone, and then we get them booked with the doctor on a three-way call. Once they are off the phone, they just treat until I send a demand. Why do I need to meet them? Plus clients love the convenience.

I settle 85% or so pre-lit (I have about 300 cases and 40-50 in lit at any given time). A bunch of my lit files never make it to depo. For example, the case I had with Chandler, they made an offer of ZERO prelit. I filed a lawsuit and it settled before Chandler even filed an answer.

the path to financial success as a solo is either 1) become so much of an in-demand expert in your niche that you can command sky-high (six figure plus per engagement) fees or 2) do as little actual legal work as possible and leverage professional staff; spend all of your time generating business and growing your staff as needed

Actually, I only do plaintiff's side work. My practice is 100% plaintiff's side contingency work (personal injury). My seven/eight figure cases I bring in heavy hitter trial attorneys (Mike Alder, Nick Rowley, Brian Panish, etc). My split with them is 50/50 on fees and they pay 100% of costs. I have a bunch of seven figure cases and two eight figure cases with that type of arrangement.

It's nearly impossible to make more than 500-600k as a lawyer doing hourly work. The richest lawyers have contingency practices.

I know you only do P-side PI contingent fee cases. You said most of your work is car accidents. What are the 7-8 figure cases--the causes of action? Are you standby counsel? JFC at 50/50 split. Do you have to do anything to work them up?

My 7-8 figure cases are car accidents too. I have a few class actions that I split with a friend, but the arrangement is the same. My big cases are mostly spinal fusion surgeries and traumatic brain injury. I don't know what you mean by standby counsel, but no I don't have to do any work when I associate in these heavy hitters. I can do as little or as much work in the case as I want. My name is still on the pleadings and I "second chair" the trial. I make sure that all communication still goes through me though to maintain the relationship with the client. I also make sure to defend the client's depo (and prep them) so I have visibility with the client. As far as the client is concerned, I am lead counsel.

I will bring them in before trial sometimes. Just having the name attached to the case can more than double the value. So if I can get an earlier settlement and my fees are the same, why would I not bring them in?

For example, if I mediate a case and Mike Alder is sitting in the room, it may settle for $2 mil instead of $1 mil, just because defense knows that it will actually go to trial and there is significant exposure.

i thought the amount of money depended on your earning potential and amount of care needed for lifetime. this amount seems ridiculous based on the meager information we know - 84 year old man losing a leg (or two). i could see 17.5M for a child thats paralyzed for life

his holiday party pics tell you all you need to know.

dude was not only jacked as fuck, but he had shit tons of clients and employees attending, and MC'ed the whole thing.

i read that to mean he's disciplined as fuck, outgoing, and organized.

collecting 180s and making friends i guess. i heard he invites other handsome poaster bros over to his LA mansion for ritualistic suck and fuck sessions. very prestigious shit.

I am constantly expanding my social network/reach. XO is just another place to make good connections. There are actually a lot of good dudes on this site and I have already made great connections/gotten referrals from members. I even had a case against Chandler that recently got settled. If you just add value to peoples life without asking for anything in return, you will be successful.

Lurker since 2007. Just started posting a few years ago. This is the first time I posted this but my last job before going solo was working for a lawyer who is super famous on XO.

E-mail me your guess and I'll confirm if true. Many poasters already know the answer.
