I have a job that lets me work from home about 2-2.5 days a week and when I am in the office I'm working at 30% capacity for the most part. I'm soul-crushingly bored. When I go home, I have an hour of chores at most at night.

I already go to the gym. I already have a side hustle that gives me 10K of income a year. At most this takes up like an hour of my day.

I can't leave my job because it's too fucking cushy. Think BIGFED but a better salary. I've even posted about it before.

I'm thinking about going back to school to get a second graduate degree. My employer would pay for most of it and I could do the work with my free time, and in general, while I sit at work. It'd give me something to do and strive towards and open up some employment doors in the future.

Until then the only things I do are hang out with my gf, read, play video games, megapost, and sleep. I sleep, A LOT. It makes me feel better during the day but depressed as fuck in the mornings. For example on a Friday I can sleep until noon if I want, as long as I turn on my work's chat client and pretend to be "busy" after I wake up around 10am (employer thinks I just got into the office), go check for any messages around 11 ("oh hey! sorry, I was away, what's up?"), and again at noon.

I really don't know what else to do. I used to photograph as a hobby, but it's not the best weather this time of year and my main "free hours" (btwn like 5ish and 8ish) are shitty for traveling around the area.

Oh and I am already on 300mg of Buproprion which I guess helps numb everything so at least there's that.

Yea I am in the same boat but make slightly less. Work takes up just enough time to make throwing my energy into something I care about very difficult. Throw in the added dimension that I am not sure what I care about and its quite the pickle.

What kind of industry? And what have you done about the boredom? It's a weird catch-22 because I actively try NOT to take on more work because it seems too taxing now, but the lack of doing things is basically the problem.

I think my idea of getting another degree will help. That and I am picking up a direct report at work, so that may encourage me to work slightly harder. If I could be busy M-W, I could use Fridays to chill and read and catch up on life stuff, and I am sure I could find enough to fill my Thursdays. My thinking is with these two things, I can "fill" some gaps and it has the added benefit of helping me secure a better job in the future.

But I still struggle with not having my worth being wrapped up in my job. For many urban, graduate-educated young folks, it's really difficult to split job/prestige from the essence of self. "What do you do?" is always people's number one question, after all.

My employer has a very generous tuition program and the school has a deal with my employer so it's a double dip, unique situation, I'd pay under 10K all in.

The degree is an MS so it's technical and combines with what I currently do to expand the fields where I can get jobs and even in my own field makes me a more unique candidate for more senior-level gigs.

I do think with more seniority at a job, I would be more intellectually invested in the job. But right now I'm so used to being cushy and bored, I'm almost afraid I'd crack if I had too much work to do, which now makes me seem like fucking Goldilocks because I want to have it both ways.

I moved to a new city and strove for years to get to where I am, so I was mentally invested and quite happy, actually, but then when I fucking caught the rabbit at the end of the race, I realized I had invested too much of my personal worth into my employment situation and in general, lack things to do. I don't want kids right now and as we both seem to point out, it's not easy to just get some sort of time consuming hobby.

I'm trying to glean anything from someone in this situation. You might not have the answers but any general ideas?

Mine is a mixture of professional development: school, getting a direct report; and some personal development: reading more, working out more

It's not perfect but if it keeps me busy 50-75% more of the time, I'd probably be happier.

Dude I am thinking along the same lines but when you see it spelled out it just seems inadequate. I want to find something where I can exert myself fully. I think wagecucking, steady income, is very difficult for that. I feel like I am just buzzing through life going 65%. Been making some reckless crypto bets.

Yea to be quite fair having a house with a garden, nice library, and putting real roots down with GF is probably cr.

Many of the things we used to occupy ourselves with are not as accessible anymore or have lost meaning (friends are harder to see, I don't care about sports or politics really anymore). I make about 120k in low COL area that is cold and grey in the winter.

120K in low COL with low stress, to 95% of XO, is "maeking it" so congrats at least on that

You could actually afford a house and life and shit ... I'd need to make significant changes to get 120K in are country ... actually one reason to do my master's degree program perhaps

age? COL? I live in a fairly expensive area

are you bored? what do you do about it?

the 3 things I have going for me are 1) a plan to actually change this, but who knows if it will work, 2) a gf to have another human to waste time with and 3) depression meds already which helps keep me afloat

and I guess 4) I am financially stable since I bring in just under 200K all-in (includes 401K matching and shit) so I am financially secure (no mortgage) and have no debt.

at least buproprion has almost no side effect and it's a cheap generic

31 in one of the most expensive cities. I'm bored to death every day.

- i also have a gf that is pretty 180.

- I'm planning to leave govt for a salary bump

- right now I'm looking for a side hustle.

- the only things that keep me sane are hooping 3 days a week and collecting/reading books.

- I find that athletic activity keeps me in a good mood. Idk if that would help but it's been the difference to me.

I'm jealous of the financial situation. I still have 60k in IBR and no inheritance coming to pay it off.

It's two things. 1) I need a sense of purpose and 2) I need my sense of purpose to not be entirely about my job. I have a cool title so for outward appearances I feel fine. But I became really depressed when I started to look for jobs because I realized how much I had wrapped up in my employment. But like a lot of WAGECUCKS there's not much else to have purpose over.

I could "cop a family" but for other reasons I'm not ready to do that. And it is very risky to be unhappy and use kids as a solution to that. If things didn't work right (sick kids, problems with wife) it would compound with my other problems to be suicide worthy.

I am the same except I'm in accounting instead of law

I'm more convinced by the day that I am basically not a fit for almost any company unless I am running the show and have equity. It's the only way I feel engaged. Otherwise I just feel dead inside

Unlike you, however, I do have something up my sleeve I'm working on

I suppose this is true

However - accounting is an utterly soul sucking profession

You do the same shit every month just with different numbers

I will at least admit that it's a good knowledge base to have. I can realistically go into any company, analyze their #s, and make good investment decisions

I am more interested in accounting from the practical, "what do the numbers mean/what story do the #s tell" rather than actually putting the #s together, which is a largely thankless and mind numbing exercise

to each his own, I'm a music and languages guy. Just find a hobby that really interests you (you can do for hours obsessively without getting bored even if it's tedious) and go ALL IN. ideally something you can practice in solitude and, once decent, with people/build social networks out of it.
