I tried reading one of those books about how to be a litigator and he has this passage about over preparing for things and basically saying that you have to become obsessed with your work if you want to succeed. I don't want to be obsessed with work. I just don't care that much.

How fucked?

This is not credited advice. Instead you should get enough experience to learn which things are actually important and which are needless. Pare way the needless things, and spend your energy on stuff that actually makes a difference. In doing this, you'll work a lot less than the gradegrind obsessives and also produce better work product. BUT, in order to obtain this sense you likely need to go through a period of indiscriminate obsessiveness, and also to have "the gift" re: reducing complex tasks to their essence.

I don't know if you've read any of the Bar Books or treatises on how to be a trial lawyer, but they typically say nothing about taking shortcuts. Sure, don't focus on extraneous shit and simplify things down to a single theme. But, all of these books take the view that practicing law is an artform must be learned through diligent work and preparation. You must work it so that it appears easy, but it never is.

Yeah, you have to do a lot of boring work but people are completely full of shit about how much, in large part because law is practiced in a womanish CYA fashion which involves a lot of makework.
