Currently doing ops finance at a vc-backed startup. $130k total comp, but really insane benefits: free healthcare covered by a great plan, lunches 2-3x a week, WFH Fridays, gym subsidy ($100). 1/2 of equity vested (.05% total grant)

Have an offer to join as senior consultant at small consulting company that does financial project management engagements. 70 total employees. Would switch clients every 2-3 months but seems like interesting projects, all local travel. Great reviews on Glassdoor and good vibes during the interview process. Offered $150k + bonus (no idea how much that is). Competitive 401k, would have to pay a little for healthcare (though not sure how much), no more WFH Fridays and gym subsidy. No equity.

Take it?

You'll definitely work more in the new role. This choice might be subjective. It probably weighs heavily on your faith in the startup's success...

Side note: How to break into financial role without finance background?

i really do think the startup has a 50/50 chance of maeking it. our results in the first 6 months of 2018 will be telling.

i don't mind the extra work, i'm just in maintenance mode at my current job and not really growing. consulting gig is appealing in that there should (hopefully) be more variety and the opportunity to expand my network in the local finance community.

depends, what's your background?

It's really a toss up then. How much do you value "variety" and is that perceived or real? You might be able to use the consulting gig to get contacts with clients and go in house. Maybe think about presenting startup w/ the offer and asking to match it? Be careful though.

polisci, unforatunely

matching the offer is risky, can't be perceived as a flight risk. yeah, toss-up is what i figured. also concerned that consulting company isn't really a brand name.

what's your data experience? excel? you could always try to get a contract job, then pivot from there.

yeah. my equity, conservatively valued and fully vested, is worth $130k after 4 years. that effectively makes my current salary equal to ~$162k. it's also probably worth more than $130k.

pretty tiny chunk tbh, but I wouldn't jump from a job with portable equity to a job where you're just a wagecuck with nicer surroundings. that's stupid.

find one where you get higher equity
