The downtowns look bombed-out: once-grand bank buildings now boarded up; department stores that once sold everything and people used to dress up to go to, then turned into junk stores in the 70s/80s and closed by 1990; windowless fraternal lodges with no members under age 80. The new "downtown" is by the intersection of two state highways and consists of a couple of gas stations, low-end fast food restaurants and maybe a shitty chain, and a no-name convenience store or 7/11 that serves as the grocery store, too.
