A lot of these people didn't really start striving hard until college. By that point, the returns to striving are a lot lower, since more people are doing it. But at least they got to have somewhat normal childhoods.
By contrast, lots of HYP undergrads were striving from preschool. And it paid off in a lot of ways, but at the cost of having a normal life.
