I can get why marginal improvements in reliability are important to a consumer, but how about marginal improvements in safety? What exactly does it mean to be in an SUV that's rated as slightly safer?

Most of the safety score differences now are who has the better lane keep assist, emergency breaking and blindspot monitoring. All the chassis are more or less equivalent. Though in the past three years there have been pretty big improvements in chassis regidity. A 2018 Elantra is 30% more ridged than a 2014.

cr but his point is that the differences are so marginal that they're essentially negligible. It's just a marketing point.

why not?

i have no idea what the fuck that means. explain it. what's the practical, real-world implication of a car being slightly better in a crash test

idk, if someone crashes into you at a higher speed, the car keeps you safer instead of rolling over or crumpling?

i see. so the cars on the safer list will stay upright and intact and the others will flip and be crushed into an unrecognizable mass?

Presumably these ratings include preventative measures as noted above

The meaning is a (hopefully) reduced probability of injury, whether through prevention or in a crash itself

Did anyone actually look at the safety ratings? It appears the difference is almost entirely attributable to headlights and ease of use of child seat anchors. LOL
