Yeah, MLB/NBA/NFL all have 30+ teams but America has a lot of good players in those sports. We suck at soccer so why not keep the league smaller until we actually start producing good players in large numbers? Anything more than like 16 teams just seems crazy. |

The teams were terrible, it was like watching a high school team play. They should expand to 40-48 teams and then split into 1 and 2 tier based on relegation. Owners can only relocate teams who finish in relegation in the 2nd tier. |

Each division has its own salary caps but once a team is promoted they (permanently) have the higher divisions salary cap. Would ensure that even if a big market gets relegated they will have an advantage to get back up.
If they swallowed the USL thats about 60 team. Split into 3 divisions based on market size and every year the worst team gets relegated and the top team gets promoted. every team plays twice and then you have MLS cup where all 3 divisions compete knockout. Owners can own 1 team in each division, and can continue to own if they get promoted (but can't own a 4th team).
MLS is a monopoly and I don't think the owners would care about relegation as long as they still have that monopoly. A 60 team 3 division MLS would ensure it's the only soccer league in US/Canada going forward and would have a team in every relevant market. The division 2/3 clubs are not that valuable, giving current owners a chance to buy and lock in now would be a no brainer for many I think. |

But while I think MLS is dead wrong on a lot of things, like having playoffs, I don't think Americans would tolerate a league where 2-3 teams win ever single year for 10+ years.
Really all we need to do is be better than mexican, brazilian and argentine leagues. We are by far the wealthiest market in the Americas. Even with mediocre interest in the sport MLS could and should be the top league in N/S America. MLS will be a serious league when midlevel brazilian guys come here instead of playing for Real Sociedad. |
