why lease a bmw or volvo for like $4000 down + $500 a month when you can buy one outright for $20,000 and then maybe spend 2k a year (at most) on average for maintenance..?

Maintenance costs go through the roof after 50k.

The costs come out to be the same, you might as well have a new car.

Lol at spending 1% of your net worth on a car. I mean, I spent more than that for my Honda, but again, that's not really by choice. I'm a wagecuck and have made peace with not really having sufficient financial freedom to enable real choice.

yeah so this line of xo reasoning is... just live in a 1k a month apartment on a 400K big law salary because you don't need a 2000 sq. ft. house... and then you just end up living like a pauper for your entire life so... what... you can die with $3 million in the bank? no thanks.

Buying a 24k car v. a 40k car translates to three or six months of early retirement. That's 90 additional days to spend on yourself before you die.

I suppose there are many people that literally live social security check to social security check, but that will likely not be the vast majority of people on this bort. more than likely most people here will die with millions in the bank and spending another 10k or so on a car is not going to impact when they can retire.

Nevermind that there's a decent chance you'll die before that in one of a bunch of mundane ways (cancer, heart attack, etc.) or that health issues will make that time of your life miserable anyway. What a pointless endeavor.

this is actually the class of car which holds value the WORST (inexpensive non-luxury sub through mid compact sedans). on the other hand, it also means that if your logic is more or less "who gives a shit", you should really be buying a 14k five year old camry instead of burning cash on a new one since they're so cheap to get worked on and decently reliable. The things will be a breeze to maintain up to 150k miles and likely further. buying a new non-luxury japanese car seems like the most pointless combination

Good move. I bought bmw certified preowned. The car was almost two years old but only 10k miles and clear that it always was garage parked in MFH. 2-year warranty including oil. You bring it in to the dealer, and they always replace everything regardless of whether it’s broken, because then they get paid by BMW for doing the work and no cost to you (plus a car wash every time you go in).

ljl at the awful advice itt. if you live in the bay area with 60-90 mile average daily commutes, better to go luxury. a camry-tier vehicle has awful sound insulation and the chassis rattles like crazy compared to any bmw, mercedes, audi, etc. which is tight, handles great and is soundproof af.

anything above 65 mph in a camry feels like you're really gunning it. you don't even notice in a luxury vehicle until you're at 100mph+.

Not really, I realize I'm not making $1 million/year ever. But I also understand the concept that you make what you make where the job is, and it isn't up to you to just say "hey, I don't want to work in a major city anymore, I want to work in Montana." I'd love to move to Florida but I can't because that isn't where my job is.

This is literally the exact business model for Euro cars. Lease cars to strivers who baby them and drive 10k miles/year and then sell them CPO to shrewd, calculating poasters. The problem is that once that sucker is out of the CPO warranty something will blow up, not to mention depreciation goes off a cliff. Whereas if you had gotten a Camry you could just ngaf, and if you decide to keep it forever you win (fewer repair$), or if you decide to sell it you win too (less depreciation). V6 camrys are basically ROCKETS btw.

it's not 1997 any more. stuff doesn't "blow up" on german cars unless you get really unlucky (and you can get really unlucky with some jap pos as well).

CPO is also flame. you're paying a premium for the stupid warranty and you'll probably never use it. it's basically insurance for poors who couldn't scrape together $2K if shit hit the fan.

It is incredibly nice on SUVs. If you need ground clearance at times and low center of gravity at other times, the only real way to accomplish that is air suspension. But yes, agree on the expense.

closest i ever came to getting boned was the control box on my X5 that activates the AWD and anti lock brakes. there's a gear inside the box that's made of plastic and gets stripped around 80K-100K miles like clockwork. dealers and most mechanics replace the entire box which is around $1K just for the part. turns out you can open the box and just replace the gear which costs like $15.

I hear you but I still hear stories about big money repair$, even on 2007+ models. I don't think that much has really changed. The big change with Cars came in the late 80s/early 90s with fuel injection, not to mention CAD, plus competition from imports necessitating higher standards. 2000, 2007, 2017, same guy imo.

Btw, Cars aren't worth it like they used to be. Best way to demonstrate this is to talk to your grandmother or someone in that age group, they will have a far keener concept of Cars and the Status they denote than a Gen Y chick. My grandmother literally always knew what make/model of Car people drove and spoke of it. Both grandmothers, really. But one of them basically had the Car awareness of ARE Reptile. Gen Y, on the other hand, knows that such things are folly, and that the only truth in life is that of Phenotype, and net worth. "Carth," they tell you, "are deprethating atheths," quickly changing the subject to divert attention away from the fact that they have no assets and a negative net worth.

You don't really get shamed for driving a shitbox like you used to though because all Gen Y. So you get less "enjoyment" as a result from having the latest toy.

I like driving too but as a city-dweller all I care about is how it handles snow/potholes plus AC/heat strength. I go to lunch with my bros with Euro Cars and they're alright but they'd be more at home on the autobahn. Stop & go traffic is the reality. It's like having a big dick but being under 6` so you can't use it.

Brother, you DO NOT want to have your MB serviced by the retarded grease monkeys at your local Valvoline quick lube. I'm as skeptical as the next guy concerning claims that cars need special fluids to avoid catastrophe, but it is true with modern high performance engines, especially European high performance engines. All it takes is one idiot using the wrong oil in your car or one manager chasing a performance based bonus telling the employees to complete service job even if they don't have the proper fluids in stock, and your car could be fucked.

Besides, when I priced out oil changes at the dealership relative to quick lube places, there wasn't that much of a difference in price, especially when you price in the complimentary car wash and light detailing that most luxury car dealerships throw in with scheduled maintenance.

I'd rather pay the extra couple of thousand for a new one. Probably worth it in future maintenance costs anyway.

I was going to point this out too. People bought craptons of cars in the 90s, and this was right when they started lasting like twice as long, so you could get something decent/cheap with 100k and then surprisingly drive it another 100k. Nowadays I don't see the savings except for on particular types of cars. i.e. you can get random cars or SUVs driven by old people, Buicks/Chevys etc, for like $5995 asking price with like 60k miles. Meanwhile there are too many folks who think that a slightly used Honda is like the ULTIMATE lifehack which drives the price up.

OP is right, except additional query--why buy a luxury car per se.

Just do a Taurus or a Buick that's a couple years old. You get the same baseline gravitas if you get a dark colored one with chrome highlights that you would get with a much more expensive vehicle. AND with domestic cars like that, you really SEE the cost differential with a car a couple years old.

there's probably some shitboomer VP whose entire job depends on being able to convince the other shitboomer execs that Buick has an "established brand" and a "loyal customer base" whenever someone brings up that they could just slap a Cadillac badge on every buick and charge like $4K more.

The retention of Buick in America presumably as noting more than a marketing ploy for China is baffling, especially in the context of GM's dumping of Pontiac. Pontiac was so damn close to turning the corner with the next generation of Solstice and G8, and I assume introduction of a rear wheel drive G6. I tried to buy a G8 GXP but mistimed the market by a month.

With there being like 7 different new models of cop cars splitting the market nowadays, an unmarked Crown Vic seems as likely as anything to be a cop. When it doesn't look like crap I still assume it's a cop.

There are still plenty of Crown Vics in police department fleets, but yes, their numbers are starting to dwindle.

I agree with OP. I bought a one year old BMW 550i that was babied by the previous owner, and I absolutely love that car. It's a blast to drive, whether I am poking around town or cannonballing down back roads.

This approach is not without risks. At least with BMW, they have had a very shaky (and by shaky, I mean massive issues) history as of late with their new performance engines. However, these issues were addressed with updated versions of the engines. Make sure you do plenty of research in make/model specific forums to affirmatively confirm that the model and year of car you are buying is dependable.

It also helps that my city's best independent BMW repair shop is only a couple blocks away, and it is owned by a 180 family.
