it's harder to see how they could build a message into math itself-- i'm not quite sure how you'd set up a simulation in which math worked differently, aside from hacky solutions like messing with the brains of whatever intelligent beings exist in your simulation whenever they try to do math. a pattern within math itself (like in the digits of pi in the book version of Contact) is the sort of thing that would raise real theological questions about the ultimate nature of the world and its intelligibility.

BUT 1) we need QM to do things like ignite stars, so QM is a necessary part of getting action in the universe, not just an accidental thing or programming defect. and

2) the dominant view now about double slit experiment isn't related to consciousness (which would imply a cool sort of video-game like simulation) but instead the multiverse model. I don't know what that does to simulation theory except put us in a very very insignificant spot.
