Pretty good.

How are you configuring the storage? I feel like unless you're planning to mirror the two SSDs, you could stick with just one for the OS and maybe frequently-used programs, and then use the HDDs for media, etc.

My other criticisms are that I don't understand the point of a $300 chassis, Dell monitors are good but a bit overpriced, and unless I'm missing something, you left out wifi/bluetooth.

that's not true. this is actually a list I created back in August. I haven't purchased it because my current machine is still going strong. however, it's now nearing the end of its life & I'm noticing myself making more and more repairs and encountering more problems. my USB3.0 ports finally shorted out, so I'm relying on USB2.0 for everything. Also, whenever I need more storage, I buy another USB hard drive, which is pretty wasteful. I built my current machine in 201 for right around $7,000.

Well, when you're talking about going buckwild on CPU and memory on some $6500 do-it-all rig, a NAS starts to make a lot of sense.

You don't need a ton of CPU on a NAS. And while you do need a decent amount of memory, something like 32GB of DDR4 ECC ought to be plenty.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148840&ignorebbr=1

That's under $900 so far for CPU/mobo/RAM. Buy 4+ of these 8TB drives on sale for $160, shuck the bare drives out of them and you're well on your way to completing a sick NAS for $2k or thereabouts

He gets a check for $2k and feels like a millionaire that day and feels a major urge to spend it.

OP needs a major change in him mindset to escape his prole upbringing. I recommend he live among the Jews for a year.

Redundancy adds up quickly.

I have a home server with 4x 3TB drives. Nominally that's 12TB, but I have it configured with two disk redundancy, so it yields 6TB.

that is not true. for example, processing my scanned documents takes an extremely long time because I scan at 600dpi & save the image in RAW format (PNM format, technically). Each page is 100 MB. Then, I process the scans, remove blanks, resize, deskew, and OCR the resulting images. When I scanned entire practitioner guides at the law schools, I would actually have to spend money sending the processing jobs to Amazon EC2 because it'd take days on my machine.

IDK why you need 600 dpi for text documents, but either way this can all be done without an i-9 or 128GB of RAM if I'm reading that correctly. which is ridiculous.

600 dpi is good for OCR.

I find that 400 dpi is about the lower bound of what will reliably produce good OCR results.

But I don't know why he wants that shit raw. And he must be saving all pages in color, even though most legal documents are better saved in black and white (not even grayscale).

I save the originals in color & do all my ocr on b&w versions. the color version is just so that I always have the "original"

Your multifunction copier and Acrobat aren't set to do that now?

I built a top tier gaming PC in 2012 for 1500 bucks. No way it’s gotten more expensive since then

a top-tier gaming PC only requires a good graphics card and a good processor. you don't need much RAM or disk space.

this machine will have decent processing power and a FUCK TON of RAM so that I'm not relying on SWAP space as much. Right now, I am using 11.1GB of the 16GB available RAM I have. I am almost always maxed out on RAM, which slows shit down.

also, one of the biggest problems I have is backing up data. I use duplicity to automate backups to AWS every other day. The amount of processing that occurs is massive given that every single file I want to back up has to be checked for changes.

Unless you're gaming, you have way too much monitor width and not enough height.

i cant imagine spending $7,000 on a computer. That sounds like something people did in the early 90s.
