I was playing it on and off recently on an emulator and it reminded me of playing it as a little kid.

the sense of mystery and discovery, solving some of the puzzles through trial and error or even word of mouth. You could just wander the overworld and accidentally find something. The concept of saving too, this was a big game, who knows how long it will take you to uncover all its secrets. My friends and I would speculate on what happened at the end and then I started hearing rumors of the 2nd quest, a whole new adventure awaiting after you completed the game, a major achievement itself.

There were really no console games close to it at the time. There were some computer RPGs that were but they required a $2K home PC and I was too young to really play them, plus they didn't have a soundtrack like Zelda

Miyamoto said he wanted to make a game inspired by good times he had as a kid running around playing the forest, he definitely succeeded

also consider the context of the time, a home game like Zelda or even Super Mario Bros was considered a gamble in its day iirc

the thinking was still people want to compete for high scores, but he thought he could make games that people would be interested in just completing

Metroid is the one that stands out as particularly groundbreaking from that period IMO.

Metroid and kid Icarus both were and metroid was 180 but it came out a little later iirc

friends and I spent countless hours playing Metroid too, both it and Zelda were such new types of non-linear games it kind of stumped you at first

I remember playing the game it version in 6th grade 20 years ago and loving it. It was like it’s own little world. I never beat it, though... Pokémon was great too in this regard.

I remeber hooking it my nes with those little fork adapters to the back of my grandparents tv when I got it during Christmas. Grampa stayed up late with me (snoring on couch) and let me play all weekend during break.
