Eminem was at least Top 5 before he went insane shitlib. Andre 3000 is up there. Lil Wayne may be Top 10.

1. I hate that someone mentioned DMX in this thread. As a 90s hip hop fan I agree though (young Jay-Z, Nas, tribe, big L, big pun, biggie, wu, etc)

2. NYC certainly isn’t the center of hip hop today. NYC rap is stale (with some exceptions eg joey badass). Either the west coast (Kendrick Lamar) or (tragically) the mumbling, trapping south has the juice

Kendrick Lamar is the genre’s messiah. Hip hop is currently in Los Angeles smoking weed in a low rider

Half of this list is laughable. Atlanta probably has a deeper bench than NYC.

in general order from most to least cringeworthy:

puff daddy

fat joe

50 cent (mediocre rapper that monetized being shot 9 times incredibly well)

ll cool j (cornball brother)

jam master jay/slick rick/doug e fresh (how old are you?)

busta rhymes (again debatable but he’s in nobody’s pantheon)

odb (lmao)

dmx (rudimentary rhymes and barking)

this is not a list that an actual rap fan (vs a top 40 pop fan) would make
