They then sell cards for a few dollars more than they paid for them, but less than face value. Today, netting an estimated 8% profit, CardCash is on track to gross $120 million by year-end.

The major company that does a lot of Gift Cards got bought out this week by PE - I had been eyeing it for years but it never got low enough for me.
Basically when you buy a gift card you give an interest free loan to the Gift Card company until the funds are drawn down, which then can be reinvested into money market or treasuries. In addition to this interest free loan, after a certain point Gift Cards used to either expire or run-off, representing direct profit to the issuer.
