According to this NYT time article from Dec. 2, the original texts were obtained by the DOJ IG: "The inspector general's office at the Department of Justice said that as part of a larger inquiry into how the F.B.I. handled investigations related to the 2016 election, the office was "reviewing allegations involving communications between certain individuals, and will report its findings regarding those allegations promptly upon completion of the review of them." https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/02/us/politics/mueller-removed-top-fbi-agent-over-possible-anti-trump-texts.html
-Strozk was kicked off the Mueller investigation in August of 2017.
-DOJ IG subpoena directed to the FBI probably came a couple months prior. Based on the texts we have (which go up through early December 2016), I bet the DOJ IG either set a certain election related time frame in the request (i.e. 1/01/15 - 12/01/16), or that is how the FBI interpreted the subpoena.
-There is zero possibility that the FBI did not read the rest of the texts from Dec. through May 17, 2017 before handing over the first batch of texts to DOJ.
-There is zero possibility that the FBI would not have been aware that those texts should have been been preserved.
The question is why do the missing texts end on the the day he started the Mueller investigation? Perhaps a corrupt FBI boomer picked a comically incriminating time-frame to delete. But I bet all of the Mueller team investigation were issued new phones, so he may have stopped using his other department phone on that date. The old phones would still have the text data, although I'm sure those have been wiped at this point as well. |
