I'm suicidal about this and I believe every therapist I tell about it is like "lol so glad I work for myself" so I don't trust them

and the anti-depression meds don't always work

some of us do have meaningful careers. the great problem, of course, is compensation.

I'd be in academia too if this weren't the case but you simply cannot "win" unless you bet right (e.g. crazy risky coins) or still get lucky in another way

maybe hard work helps but it certainly does NOT guarantee success and plenty of people are successful without it

academia (what i am in) is very cushy, but the struggle is real financially for us.

I just don't understand how the 99% at the "bottom" of the pyramid do it

In some ways I get how a law partner or physician making 500K or 1MM might do it ... struggle for a decade and you can retire or cut back

and obviously the big time CEOs and other capital holders (who ironically tend to have the workaholic personalities)

but everyone else, it just seems suicide provoking, but I guess it's children, and only children, that keeps them doing it day after day, despite the humiliation and toil

well. some people make friends at their jobs and that's their culture. my dad loved driving trucks. he loved everything about it. my mom made friends she still has from her time giving out bus passes in NYC high school. like everybody has something to do.

The key is minimalism, bro. Be less materialistic, have lower expenses, and suddenly you don't need that awful corporate job anymore or to work long hours.

I also recommend Fumio Sasaki's book

this is the kind of person I am writing about in my suicide threading

how do these people do it? how do they go to work everyday? ESPECIALLY NOW when retirement will never be possible and children will be less well off than their parents? Everything seems fucked

i did something like this for 2 years at a Big4. that was tortuous. it's huge hours and actual abuse for poor wages. most people do make less, but have very stress free jobs. the hardest part of their day is the commute.

We just interviewed a bunch of firms for M&A due diligence services, including Grant Thorton. They actually seemed like chill fratty Big Ten bros. Some of the others were ridiculously excited about helping us MAXIMIZE our SYNERGIES.
