What drives someone to teach high-school physics? Anyone teaching AP Physics could be working as an engineer at least.

Math/physics teachers in california make six figures and only work 10/12 months per annum

All the vacation time and maybe the chance to coach sports are the main benefits I think.

If we are talking about non ivy grads it's pretty difficult to get hired as full fledged engineer with just a physics or math bachelors degree nowadays, at least without significant extracurricular experience involving circuit design, cad modeling or programming.

Most of these types end up in IT, web dev, lab assistant or other fairly low level things.

I meant that if they had the brains to get a physics degree they could have easily gotten an engineering degree. But they chose to be a teacher for $50K a year.

do most high school physics teachers have physics degrees?

don't a lot of them have education degrees and they get a masters of teaching in science or whatever?

You can either have a physics degree or an education degree with a specialization in physics. Even with the education degree route you are still taking a lot of Calculus/Physics courses. If you can pass those courses, I am sure you could make it through a lot of engineering degree programs.

Higher barrier to entry than standard engineering degree. Also, medical school is mainly rote memorization. The types of people who excel at physics might find this difficult/unappealing and you have to work with annoying people and their disgusting bodies.
