Got soft talk, had anticipated this so already have a vetted recruiter lined up. Decent number of firms hiring. Need to make the right choice here - anything to look for?

someone with a good mentor. you don't have it now or you'd be staying. and it's worth it. find someone you'd really want to work for otherwise it could be worse.

Spend as much time as you can with the people you'd actually be working with at each prospective firm. If you aren't meeting those people, run away.

How much time do you have? It may be wherever you can get an offer before you end up in the dreaded world of NOT-ON-THE-WEBSITE-PWNED.

Any firm that does this is nonpeer and will be culled in the V10 Awakening as prophecied by Saint Clement.

I have no hard date yet. Standard practice here would give me at least 3-4 months, maybe more if work picks up or if the firm is feeling generous.

Don't go to the place that seems desperate to bring you in and tried to move up your hire date.

I was at a mega-firm so crushed with work that we'd beg qualified midlevel and senior laterals to join and start asap. Then they'd just get immediately crushed. I always felt so bad.

Honestly I wouldn't mind too much. I don't want another firm where you need to fight other associates just to have a shot at making hours.

You'd be surprised. My office was in a rough patch ~11-13 months ago and we hired a completely unneeded lateral for no reason. Not even for a specific group, just a generalist thrown into the pool.

Would be my ideal outcome but not sure how to make it work time wise. Would probably need to hold off on firms for a month or more just to get some in house nibbles going.

Finding a mentor is the ultimate goal and finding people you like working with is the biggest difference-maker. Beyond that, if you get a few bites you can totally negotiate a signing or end of year bonus--but no need to get greedy, you need an offer first.

Oh--and even though the new firm will insist that you need to start ASAP, you need to firmly tell them you had a preexisting vacation or wedding or something that week, and then book a 2 week trip.

Vacation seems like CR. All of my vacations while actually in biglaw have been complete shit bc of completely unnecessary work, etc.
