you can make a way better steak for like 1/3 of the price at home--even just on a grill, while drinking a can of beer on the deck outside.

I do a good steak, man. A good steak. I like to eat them standing up, right off the charcoal grill, lifted off the grill w a table fork and then dropped onto a plate balanced on the railing of my deck. I drink a beer, cut some pieces, call kid, "Hey c'mere" and cram a bite or two ive cut off into his mouth. Then I eat some, yell inside to wife to see if she wants any, ask kid if he wants any more--he usually says no--he's a little guy--and then I eat the rest. I get another beer. maybe dick around with asparagus if I still have some heat coming off the grill.

Given your total fucking proleness, I have to ask: have you ever been to a place like Wolfgang's? Peter Luger? Mastro's? I cook steaks in my backyard too. Delmonicos for $25 a pound. They are OK for a nice summer day kicking back by the lake with a brewski. But it's not the fucking same as a dry aged steak cooked at 1600F in an infrared oven to a perfect crust and then served atop sizzling butter. It's just not. We're not talking about Logan's Road House here. We are talking about shit that comes out with a perfect crust but still rare in the middle: http://media.nj.com/food/photo/wolfgangs-steakhouse-in-somerville-12e9089cdeccadff.jpg You can't make that at home, I promise you.

you are not answering, lukewarm matsutake mushroom bouillon. It wouldn't surprise me if in a place like NYC you could drop $300 per head for that with just a couple cocktails thrown in.

Here's my point. For $12 and a little bit of effort you could get 80% of the pleasure of that just by buying a nice piece and cooking it at home. Is the remaining 20 percent or so WORTH the additional Hundreds of dollars? No fucking way. no way man.

You are right! Wow! When you look at it that way that's not so bad. BUT, you don't go in and just order the steak. You get a side, you get a drink, an app, gotta do all that stuff so "steak dinner" still ends up being $200.

Whereas I can cook a hugegass steak at home for honest to god $12 bucks, okay lets go nuts and say $25, and a couple of beers at a buck apiece, and I'm still WAY WAY WAY ahead on the steakhouse game. No semi mandatory apps and sides either. Pure protein.

I am refining my point.

My point is the remaining $100 you spend at a steak restaurant is not so value-added or worth it that it justifies the 80 percent or so pleasure basis youd get from just grilling a nice steak at home.

So its still a scam because the restaurant--STEAK restaurant in particular, captures that additional 20% BUT you have to pay $100 for that additional 20%, when the first 80% only cost you 12 bucks, or $25, if you are fancy at home.

I already answered you. What you are calling steak is not what I consider "going out for steak." I could eat a $3 sausage and peppers in the same situation you describe and be completely happy with it. (Or a thin shitty steak.) A meal at Wolfgang's will set you back $100-$150 per person. Not a big deal for me, especially considering I only want to do it every few months, but to each his own. Actually, I consider steak places to be a bargain compared to actually fancy prix fixe places we usually go.

I just don't get what you get out of t that you couldn't do for better on your own at home, or at least cap off the max bennies and then get diminishing returns on the remaining $100 you spend.

TCR. You need a $3,500 oven to do it right. https://www.bluestarcooking.com/cooking/broilers/salamander-broiler/

It cooks from both sides simultaneously so it can get a crust around the outside but leave the inside perfectly rare.

The only way to come close at home is with a cast iron skillet. I can do it ok with super thick filets and a 550 degree oven. But you're not going to pull it off like a restaurant with a 2" strip or porterhouse.

But sometimes I just take a steak and grill it on a cast iron skillet you can buy at dicks or Costco and cover the top of the pan with some newspaper to keep in the smoke. time it right and its pretty damn good. 90% of a 50 dollar restaurant steak.

Because it's ridiculously easy to cook a steak at home? I can't cook Indian food b/c I don't have all the spices. A steak? I just need to buy some meat and throw it on the grill.

it's ridiculously easy to cook most things at home.

btw, if you like indian food and like to cook, why wouldnt you get the spices for indian food? you just need to get shit once a year

Ok what about $45? Maybe it's different in MFH or other major city but outside of there, good steakhouses charge around $45-50 for a 20 oz ribeye.

Comparable price would be around $16/lb for prime, or $20 for the steak. However you also have to season and cook it yourself and then clean the kitchen. Even assuming it's the same quality, you are paying about $25 to not have to do all that.

Plus you have to pay for gas or public transportation to get you to and from the restaurant. You have to pay the ridiculous markup on drinks and side dishes. Then sit around like a tool while your waiter serves you. And on top of that tip 20%. Its a pretty egreguous waste of $.

Steakhouses have lower margins than other businesses. They make their money on drinks, appetizers, and desserts. You can see this from public filings. Cheesecake Factory has higher profit margins than Ruth's Chris.

you're not getting non-aged choice cuts at steakhouses. you get prime, dry-aged meat, which if you buy it at a store is expensive.

I think the better question is whether it's necessary. I never buy prime from the grocery store because I think it's almost as big a scam as organic foods.

the only good kosher places are israeli restaurants that are just marketed as middle eastern food or israeli food. if you want to appeal to the masses, you need good quality food and service. if you want to appeal to kikes only, you just call yourself a kosher restaurant.

Actually, dude, you are laughing but a bro and I made a huge platter of sashimi once. We took a bunch of mostly frozen salmon and tuna and cut it up like sashimi slices and wives made white rice and we had wasabi and soy sauce and it was fucking fantastic. And WAY cheaper than if we had ordered the same platters in a restaurant.

It was like eating fish ice cream or something because the fish was really cold.

hilarious how the OP picked the one restaurant type with the most value.

steakhouses have the lowest margins on pure steak dishes, and few other food types require a $3-5k grill, weeks of aging, niche spices and ingredients, etc.

should've picked on avocado toast or sashimi instead.
