Trump WH explains why it won't implement Russia sanctions Congress passed 530-5

Date: February 4th, 2018 10:51 AM Author: Walnut Hairless Garrison The Trump administration, under fire from lawmakers for not punishing Moscow over election meddling, said Monday it will not implement Russia-related sanctions mandated by Congress last year because the threat itself is acting as a "deterrent."
The decision was made public after nightfall on deadline day for implementing sanctions against those who do business with Russian defense and intelligence firms, as required under a 2017 law.
Since the law took effect six months ago, said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, "We estimate that foreign governments have abandoned planned or announced purchases of several billion dollars in Russian defense acquisitions."
The decision was less concrete than some lawmakers envisioned when the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act passed last summer. Though also mentioning Iran and North Korea, the law was billed as a U.S. response to Moscow's interference in the 2016 presidential election.
A list of potential targets was drawn up last month in anticipation of Monday's deadline for implementing secondary sanctions. Instead, a State Department official said there is no need for them to be put into place now "because the legislation is, in fact, serving as a deterrent."

More details were provided to Congress in classified briefings, and some Democrats were angered. Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he was “fed up” with the administration’s failure to punish Russia over election interference.
So more of Dems grandstanding about information they don't believe will be made public, so they can say whatever they want about it. |

And that Putin would later invade another country, occupy a portion of it, and work to destabilize it shows the need for a proper response. And yes, the soviet influence in American elections was rightly made an issue in the past and was something this country did respond to (as it should now).
Again, Trump's policy on Russia and his non-enforcement of the sanctions appears not to be part of a framework to gain some concession from Russia, but something else entirely. The administration must explain specifically what it is doing and how it furthers american interests. This is especially warranted given just how outside the mainstream the administration's views on Russia are. |

Ossetians and Abkhazians don't even care for Russia (so you can legitimately consider them to be under Russian occupation) while most Eastern Ukranians are inherently pro-russia anyway since they are fellow Orthodox Slavs. |

The invasion of Ukraine was even worse in that it destroyed the Ukrainian economy and broke the country apart, and was not in response to any aggressive military action on the part of Ukraine. Yanukovych was democratically elected, the people of Ukraine overall happened to elect a pro-Russian leader, and they were denied the democratic right to do so. Even Yanukovych's former political party was also banned.
There are genuinely pro-Russian/anti-Western Ethnic Orthodox Slavs in Eastern Ukraine and they were politically disenfranchised to the benefit of the pro-Western Catholic Slavs in Western Ukraine.
If people democratically vote for a pro-Russian leader denying them that right is by definition anti-democratic. If the people of Egypt want to vote for the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, and are denied that right, that is also by definition anti-democratic. At that point, it is no longer about democracy. |
