Weren't they hits? It's a great formula and great role for Nic Cage. He could have badly used a franchise at that stage of his career so I doubt he was the issue. Hollywood will run even terrible concepts into the ground if they can make money with them. What happened?

I finally went to Wikipedia to figure this out. The explanation is really unsatisfying and vague. Something about the studio not being happy with the script but in truth there is no plausible reason.

I am starting to assume that Nicholas Cage was viewed as too risky when it came time to finance a third one. His career fell off a cliff once he started having money problems and releasing six straight-to-video movies a year.
