so let's not do anything?
let's not limit the amount of ammunition people can be? let's not ban certain guns? let's not have extensive background checks and waiting periods before people can buy guns? let's not ban bump fire stocks?

are you stupid, faggot?
the vegas shooter, for example, used a bump fire stock. ban that shit. maybe instead of 600 injured and 60 dead it would have been 1/10 that number.
in fact, let's ban any gun that isn't a handgun and a shotgun. rifles should not be legal at all for civilians. if you think that's what the founding fathers intended you're a lying sack of shit

"Madison calculated while writing Federalist Paper 46 that the standing military, controlled by the federal government, should be kept under a maximum of 30,000 troops, enough to defend America against other nations but not enough to oppress the states. The states themselves, to protect themselves from the federal government from overpowering them with the threat of a standing army like Great Britain did when King George III sent his battalion to America, were allowed a total militia of 500,000 people. The purpose of the militia changed with the passing years as well. Instead of being there to protect the states from being too controlled by the federal government, the militia’s purpose now is to respond to natural disasters and protect individuals stuck in those situations."
maybe you're the one who should read it, dipshit

You're giving me an analysis saying things have changed since Madison. That's nonresponsive. Your initial statement was the founding fathers didn't want us to have rifles. That is wrong
-----
Extravagant as the supposition is, let it however be made. Let a regular army, fully equal to the resources of the country, be formed; and let it be entirely at the devotion of the federal government; still it would not be going too far to say, that the State governments, with the people on their side, would be able to repel the danger. The highest number to which, according to the best computation, a standing army can be carried in any country, does not exceed one hundredth part of the whole number of souls; or one twenty-fifth part of the number able to bear arms. This proportion would not yield, in the United States, an army of more than twenty-five or thirty thousand men.
To these would be opposed a militia amounting to near half a million of citizens with arms in their hands, officered by men chosen from among themselves, fighting for their common liberties, and united and conducted by governments possessing their affections and confidence
Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of.

It's similar to abortion
Both sides think their respective item is a fundamental right and any attempt to infringe on that right is a slippery slope to a complete ban
At least conservatives are transparent in their wish to have abortion banned. Libs want to ban and confiscate all guns but try to nibble along the edges until they get there

Also re: bump stocks
Repubs agreed to ban it. Dems threw in bans on suppressors and magazines and other shit. That killed the bump stock ban
That was the fault of libs, not repubs

1 - "let's not limit the amount of ammunition people can be?"
How many rounds were fired in Florida? 100? One little box of ammo is 50 rounds.
https://www.targetsportsusa.com/aguila-9mm-luger-ammo-124-grain-full-metal-jacket-092110-p-3401.aspx
2 - "let's not ban certain guns?"
Which ones?
3 - "let's not have extensive background checks and waiting periods before people can buy guns?"
In which cases do you think further background checks would be effective? They wouldn't have stopped Las Vegas.
4 - "let's not ban bump fire stocks?"
There isn't a lot of support for them, and several states are looking at bans.

1. not sure what your point is. unless you're at a shooting range, why should you be able to possess hundreds of rounds? for what reason? aliens fucking landing?
you're not going to defeat the goddamn federal govt's army if they decide to (which they never will) annihilate your ass.
2. i'm not a legislator and morally obligated to research this shit. it's clear that some guns should be banned altogether for civilian use.
3. love how you used vegas as the example for when background checks wouldn't have helped. you're right. that's one example though. almost all the other mass killings have been clearly deranged fuckheads.
4. why not a federal ban?

1 - It's obvious. You don't need lots of rounds to kill lots of people. To the extent your comment about defeating the government is relevant, it weighs against ammo restrictions.
2 - How is it clear to you if you concede you don't know what you're talking about?
3 - You ignored my question. Here it is again: "In which cases do you think further background checks would be effective?"
4 - "why not a federal ban?" Because Democrats don't want one. It would give Republicans a win, and Democrats insist that the ban be larded up with their other pet restrictions.

you're too dense to even be OPEN to my suggestions.
do i know a lot about guns? no.
do i know enough that gun control needs to be legislated on a federal level? yes.
my god. school shooting after shooting and you faggots want to say shit like "more guns are better". yes, let's arm our teachers.
regarding point #3 - you don't see any benefit in people with mental disorders and people on certain medications having to AT THE VERY LEAST have a long waiting period + a rigorous background check?
regarding #4 - is this a joke? your faggot politicians have more earmarks than any other party in history. you shove shit up bills that have literally nothing to do with the bill itself.
old news? yes. fake news? no.

(90 IQ dipshit)
How many die yearly now?
How many would die during the civil war over confiscation?
How many would die the next time Hitler/Drumpf got elected and starts killing nuisance groups?
How many would die when China/Russia nukes the military and invades the defenseless citizens?
How many would die when Europe is conquered or falls into war because the US isn’t playing world police?
The second amendment is an insurance policy (and a damn effective one) whose premiums are unfortunate gun homocides.

the overall homicide rate in the US, when controlling for demographics, is very close to that in Europe.
would the white homicide rate go from 2.5 to 1.5 if we banned guns like europe? perhaps, but that's part of the price you pay for any freedom.
you'd drop the overall homicide rate alarmingly fast if we strictly controlled all black citizens. would you suggest that?

Yes.
A big part of the tension between urban minorities and police is because police are terrified of being shot at by randoms.
Do you have a link for the crime rate by demographic stat? Not saying you’re wrong, but am genuinely interested in reading about it.

Homicide rate is 98+% 1-4 people getting killed by handguns. Realistically no one is banning handguns and city level restrictions in blue states are a completely different debate. Every mass shooting is gigantic AR-15esque gun sold legally to crazy fucking assholes, most of whom (other than basically the Vegas guy) were pretty easy to identify as people who are disturbed, see eg Trump’s tweet this morning. That’s the problem to solve. Crazy fucker plus big gun needs to be a big focus of attention. Meanwhile:

i personally want to limit muslim immigration, strengthen the requirements for all immigrants (including extensive background checks), but also want major gun control.
the obsession with guns in this country is insane.

a functional and easy-to-access national database of everyone "blacklisted" from owning a gun. that should include anyone on certain medications, histories of mental illness, felons, etc.
banning any high capacity ammo.
limiting how much ammo a person can purchase and hold. i realize this will be difficult to enforce but so are other laws that are on the books.
banning any semi-auto that can easily be converted into a fully automatic.
no assault rifles. actually fuck it, let me go one step further. no semi-automatic rifles either. ban the fucking AR-15. why the fuck does a civilian need that shit.

How is anything I said either racist or greedy or antisocial?
Do you want to have a conversation or just throw around personal attacks?
I'll repeat for good measure: If gun control advocates were intellectually consistent, their willingness to trample the rights of Americans should extend past mere gun control as it pertains to black americans since their stated goal is reducing gun deaths.

It's undermining the right to bear arms with what seems like "commonsense" regulations that do nothing, but constitute incremental attacks on the right itself.
It's the exact same approach pro life people take with pushing for 2nd trimester parental notification requirements for teenagers between 15 and 17.

That's retarded.
Examples of *felonies* in some jurisdictions:
- throwing a soda (missile) at a bus
- filing a false bingo report
- failing to return a vehicle that secures a loan
- misusing food stamps
And it goes on and on. There are also tons of low-level regulatory felonies for things like not labeling your weed killer correctly.

not by itself, but as an incremental attack on gun rights? then yes.
what I mean is that as long as the right to own and responsibly carry guns is not secure THROUGHOUT the US, then it is completely rational for gun ownership advocates to oppose ALL restrictions, even "common sense" ones as incremental attacks.
I would be fine with mental health screening and background checks nationwide, as long as the right to carry concealed with reasonable licensing is available nationwide. You cant have cities like SF, NY, DC where is to almost impossible to own a handgun and then ask people to accept nationwide regulation.

i think we have to take the risk. We can't be adjudicating someone mentally ill because of suspicion, absent behavior that is illegal or a danger to himself or others.
if we have 100 million handguns in the US, we accept that a large number of people will be killed by firearms. mass shootings by crazies is part of that risk and for all the news coverage, the risk of a crazy with an AR-15 relative to a gang banger with a clock is insignificant.

I engage because I seem to be the only person who thinks that compromise is the answer, and that compromise means give and take, rather than take less and shame any opposition.
As long as gun ownership is a constitutional right (and I believe it is) then we need real substantive due process to take that away - which means a real court making a determination about danger.
That's why all the hand wringing about Trump overturning Obama's rule that people deemed by the social security admin as unable to care for themselves is bullshit - that is a concern, but not sufficient to take away a constitutional right absent a determination as to danger.
Having strict processes to take away rights will invariably lead to people slipping through the system (see criminal justice) but as Americans we typically think that is better than taking away rights from the "innocent"
That's the risk we have to live with in a gun culture.

i think assuming we accept the gun culture and a certain number of deaths associated with it, should:
1) make nationwide carry concealed legal and private gun ownership legal everywhere. Fuck DeBlasio, Garcetti and whoever the majors of DC and SF are.
2) stop pushing for assault weapons bans.
3) limit magazines to 30 rounds.
4) enforce background checks and waiting periods for all gun purchases, the background check should screen out anyone adjudicated mentally ill.
5) require people to report the theft of firearms and have some moderately strict penalty for people who do not report the theft and whose stolen weapons are used in a crime.
6) having licensing requirements for carry concealed (which is legal everywhere again) be comparable to a standard written and practical driving test.
compromise can work. but compromise is GIVE and take, not "we only take a little"
trying to shift the status quo through shame will not work.

1. I agree. Getting a handgun in NYC was a huge PITA. But a tough process should be required. Like in-person interviews and phone calls with co-residents (like spouses and parents, etc.) to make sure you're not giving a crazy dude a gun.
2. Why are you opposed to assault weapon bans? Those fucking things are easy to shoot, which is what makes them both fun and deadly as fuck.
3. I would go with 20. Ten is stupid.
4. Background checks should be expanded.
5. Agree. Has to be on federal level. That's why I'd push for a federal gun registry to cut down on straw buyers.
6. I agree with this 100%. Make gun applicants show up in a police station or something and someone should look at some goofy fuck like the Columbine shooter and not give him a gun.

what you ask for in 1) is too much. You need real substantive due process to restrict constitutional rights. criminal records, adjudication of mentally ill or a danger to self or others, etc. I'm okay with DMV level testing for carry concealed. Clean record, showing you know how to use a gun, etc.
2) if you want to ban an AR-15 which is ubiquitous and would thus represent a significant infringement on liberty and property, you needs to make a convincing argument that the AR-15 and other "assault weapons" are marginally substantially more dangerous than other semi automatic rifles. You can't make this argument because its not true. If you want to bank semi auto rifles, that is more intellectually consistent, but it is politically untenable. And if you are banning things based on marginal risk, you need to ban semi-auto handguns, which is the fundamental basis of our gun culture and gun rights. In other words, we allow the most dangerous weapons and accept that this will lead to a certain number of deaths each year.
- but at least we have a starting point for compromise and some points of agreement. This is 100X better than trying to shame people into one-sided action with photos of dead children that we pretend to care about unless they are our children.
