pddj was complaining about this, and she's right. 15 --> 20 is a 33% jump. she also said that 12 --> 15 is a 25% jump, and she's right that that's also a big jump.

i think she's right -- a standard gym has little weights for every pound, and then when you're going from 12 to 15 to 20, those are huge jumps, and it makes it hard. there are exercises where she can do 8-10 reps at 15 and then she picks up a 20 and cant do a single rep.

in israeli/european gyms i've used, they dont have this problem. you'd ordinarily have a weight for every kilogram up to 10kg, and then it's every 2 kilos. so you'd have 5, 6, 7, 8 kilos, which is like 11, 13, 15.5, 17.5, etc.

In powerlifting this phenomenon is pretty well documented with respect to females. Their ability to rep as compared to absolute max is sometimes very thin.

For example, you'll see a strong chick squatting 265x5 for perfect clean reps. Go to 275, and she gets stapled on the first rep.

Females have less muscle, but the muscle fiber type ratio (slow twitch vs. fast twitch) also differs from men.

It's easier to imagine if you take his example percentage increase of 33% and apply it to a bigger number. Like a dude squatting 400lbs. 33% to that is 530+.

The 400lbs was a comparative example because you said you'd never seen this issue at low weight, and I was just pointing out the jump may be more significant than it seems if a weak girl is doing it, and the movement requires poor upper body leverage.

The relationship between repping and 1rm becomes more consistent as one gets stronger (more skilled).
