tbf, buying a new m3 is a REALLY dumb financial decision, you can get a lightly used one from the current gen for about 45k loaded (probably 2016 MY). I get the feeling the current generation is going to go down as pretty TTT anyway, and would stay away.

That is 50% true and 50% FUD used to suppress the price. Seems to be the case for turbos/Audis though.

E92 M3 is just a cool buy because it's probably the last NA V8, which in all likelihood also means it'll give fewer problems, engine-wise.

e9x 3 series are actually fairly reliable, the m3 has problems with rod bearings and actuators (this will cost you a few thousand one time), but aside from that the largest cost isn't from the cars breaking down its the maintenance. getting new tires, brakes, and changing the oil.

the new m3 is too new to say. but i'm fairly certain maintenance won't be ANYTHING close to the depreciation, particularly for something that's only a few years old.

the horror stories you hear about used german luxury cars costing an arm and a leg to fix tend to be 10 year old 7 series or s classes where the parts are fairly rare.

maybe the particular generation you have isn't as fraught with issues, or maybe you've been lucky.

that's generally not going to be the running cost on an old flagship german car with lots of for the first time type of tech.

I have a friend with a 5 series from the same year and he leaves it out in the northeast all winter, never changes the oil and it still runs fine. Sure he could take it to a garage and they'd tell him he needs $12K in repairs but why not just run it into the ground

his car likely takes synthetic oil which you don't change as often as normal oil. If he actually didn't change the oil ever LOOOL at his car not ABSOLUTELY breaking down. I'm not sure why leaving his car out has anything to do with anything. Maybe it'll promote rust or put undue wear on his tires, but it shouldn't make any pieces of the car not work. Let's not pretend bmws are some stalwarts of reliability.

Link to me saying that owners of other cars don't fall victim to the same scam? The point is they aren't expensive to own because they're unreliable; they're expensive to own if you perform dumbass repairs because the parts are more expensive than non-luxury cars. "Link to me saying that owners of other cars don't fall victim to the same scam?"

So then explain the differences in reputation between different luxury cars. Why is a 7 series or S class considered money pits when an LS isn't?

"The point is they aren't expensive to own because they're unreliable; they're expensive to own if you perform dumbass repairs because the parts are more expensive than non-luxury cars."

So then I guess Lexus LS owners don't make dumbass repairs, and that's why they don't have the money pit reputation, got it.

I'll lay it out since you're too dense to get it without me laying it out. The argument that people are making "unnecessary repairs" is weak. That wouldn't be unique to bmw owners, so why the bad reputation for 7 series and not an LS? If other luxury brand car owners also make unnecessary repairs why the discrepancy in reputation. And frankly its not just a difference in reputation. If you look at actual repair data, 7 series break more often. It's because the LS is more reliable. Similarly when you move down the range a 3 series is WAY more reliable than a 7 for the most part (excluding the 335i in the 2000s that had all sorts of issues).

"That's the only point I've made yet you seems dumbfounded and determined to argue against some other position"

Wait I thought I was "agreeing" with you.

i actually own a mustang gt, not the current one but previous generation. i think it's a great car, but a mustang gt IS NOT a luxury car. A new toyota camry is far more luxurious, might as well say why get an E300 when you can get a loaded up toyota camry with a V6!!!

a note on the current mustang gt, it's nice, but it's still MILES away from the material quality of the germans, you can get a lot of the same features, but you can tell that the features aren't necessarily of the same quality. premium audio for instance in a ford is not the same as premium audio in lets say a lexus or mercedes.

there's a difference in material and quality, the display monitor for luxury cars are far nicer than for an economy car, so your apple carplay is gonna look way nicer. things like heated and cooled seats will work better. ultimately though, i'd rather have extra hp over those sorts of features.

I've always been wondering this...Explain to me how you can actually sell a ~$25k car for what it's actually supposedly worth? Your only option is to deal with craigslist lowballers. Dealers will bend you over. People go to 3rd parties and get "loans" to buy cars from private parties? Or are you only taking "cash?" Like a suitcase filled with unmarked bills? Or would you only accept a cashier's cheque? What percentage of prospective E92 M3 buyers actually have this amount of money, liquid? Maybe half a dozen shrewd as fuck internet-poster types per city, all of whom who would want to lowball you.

Edit: Also ebay takes 13% lol

yeah, you're gonna get low balled but having gone through it first hand blue book values are fairly accurate for what you can get for a used bmw on craigslist. Sure it might take a little work meeting up with people, and it might take a while to sell, but you'll be able to do it. Especially with cars that are more in demand like an e46 or these days e90 m3.

Almost no one buys with straight cash that they've saved. also it'd be stupid for someone to do this, why when loans have been so cheap (don't know if that's still the case for auto loans). Usually you're getting money from a bank.

The other side of the coin in what you're saying is, "I can just go on craigslist and just lowball someone for their sweet m3 and get it cheap!" It doesn't work like that and the market is plenty big. it's WAY WAY more than half a dozen savvy internet guys. If the price even moves 3-5k under the true market value of a car, guys who make a living flipping craigslist cars would absolutely come out of the woodwork.

Won't the interest rate on a 3rd party loan for some random guy's car be a lot higher than when you buy new? I've always assumed this to be the case. Like 3%+ versus 0%.

Not sure what the rates are today, but not so long ago (a few months) a used car loan for 72 months was like 1.9 percent in my area.

Yes, but it's still a better deal. I assume I don't have to explain why 0% is GC BS, much like "free" phones.

Probably like $85-100k. I've found that people buying cars like that aren't exactly part of the elite in society. They're more like wannabe type folks.

You guys need to remember that most luxury cars are leased, which makes them easy to acquire for anyone making over $75k a yr.

What if you're in L.A. or Miami though... are you a wannabe just by default for living there?

Most people in LA or Miami are wannabe types as well, probably the worst offenders. Sure, you have legitimately wealthy people in those cities, but I think you'll be hard pressed to find a legitimately wealthy person in LA or Miami driving an M-series. People like that tend to get whatever the flagship is of the brand (S550/S65 AMG Mercedes, 750i BMW, etc) not the entry level sport-package coupe.

An S550 Mercedes is a V8 with 550 horsepower....probably much more powerful than an M3. Also, if you're actually wealthy and like "going fast", you get a Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, etc. not an M3.

When I think of an M3 I think of a salesbro who had a good quarter going out and getting a new car to celebrate, not a legit wealthy person.

Idk to me an M3 is basically a German mustang nowadays which I don't have a problem with. But an S-class Benz wouldn't really hold the road like an M3 I imagine; different types of Cars.

Most legit wealthy folks I know aren't buying cars like the M3. Usually when I see what a very well off person is driving, it's usually a Mercedes/BMW/Lexus/Land Rover flagship (Range Rover).

You act like the speed limit is 500 mph. Also, if a car with 550 horsepower is too slow for you, then you've got other issues.

It's about the driving experience, not straight line acceleration. You are so obviously not a car guy. It's the handling, the steering feel, the brakes, the communication, the weight distribution, the nimbleness, etc.

TCR but then the M3 handles exactly like a Mazda3 except when you're north of 70 and the Mazda starts to tell you it's dying a little on the inside....

Lease payment is 700 a month so probably around 120k and even that’s prob too high.

I know people making 40k a year who lease three series.

Now on the one hand it's stupid for a prole to do this but on the other you only live once and driving a nice car is up there with sex in terms of life's little pleasures so why fucking not? Is $700 a month really going to mean shit when you're on your death bed?

And with that said BMWs are overpriced and the M3 in particular just isn't that nice for $80K....

The credited prole approach is to go guard rail to guard rail between nice car you can’t afford and cheap piece of shit you can afford but hate after six months. Eventually accept that life just sucks. I leased a Camry for $99/month and they had corollas for I think $79. Even a prole can save up $12-15k over a three year lease that is that cheap and buy a nice car in the 40-50k range, and not take on a completely insane payment.

You have to be dumb and rich enough to pay for performance you will rarely if ever use.

The 340 is all the power you'd need and is a lot cheaper.
