e9x 3 series are actually fairly reliable, the m3 has problems with rod bearings and actuators (this will cost you a few thousand one time), but aside from that the largest cost isn't from the cars breaking down its the maintenance. getting new tires, brakes, and changing the oil.
the new m3 is too new to say. but i'm fairly certain maintenance won't be ANYTHING close to the depreciation, particularly for something that's only a few years old.
the horror stories you hear about used german luxury cars costing an arm and a leg to fix tend to be 10 year old 7 series or s classes where the parts are fairly rare.

You're saying the only reason bmws are seen as money pits is because of dumbs falling prey to mechanics saying they need fixes.
I'm saying yeah that's a shit argument, I don't know why bmw owners in particular would fall prey to mechanics.
You say I'm agreeing with you. So... yeah you're dense.

"Link to me saying that owners of other cars don't fall victim to the same scam?"
So then explain the differences in reputation between different luxury cars. Why is a 7 series or S class considered money pits when an LS isn't?
"The point is they aren't expensive to own because they're unreliable; they're expensive to own if you perform dumbass repairs because the parts are more expensive than non-luxury cars."
So then I guess Lexus LS owners don't make dumbass repairs, and that's why they don't have the money pit reputation, got it.
I'll lay it out since you're too dense to get it without me laying it out. The argument that people are making "unnecessary repairs" is weak. That wouldn't be unique to bmw owners, so why the bad reputation for 7 series and not an LS? If other luxury brand car owners also make unnecessary repairs why the discrepancy in reputation. And frankly its not just a difference in reputation. If you look at actual repair data, 7 series break more often. It's because the LS is more reliable. Similarly when you move down the range a 3 series is WAY more reliable than a 7 for the most part (excluding the 335i in the 2000s that had all sorts of issues).
"That's the only point I've made yet you seems dumbfounded and determined to argue against some other position"
Wait I thought I was "agreeing" with you.

I would say 200k for new and for used e90s probably somewhere in the high 5 digits.
I think the e90 or e92 is a smart buy, it seems to be done depreciating.

yeah, you're gonna get low balled but having gone through it first hand blue book values are fairly accurate for what you can get for a used bmw on craigslist. Sure it might take a little work meeting up with people, and it might take a while to sell, but you'll be able to do it. Especially with cars that are more in demand like an e46 or these days e90 m3.
Almost no one buys with straight cash that they've saved. also it'd be stupid for someone to do this, why when loans have been so cheap (don't know if that's still the case for auto loans). Usually you're getting money from a bank.
The other side of the coin in what you're saying is, "I can just go on craigslist and just lowball someone for their sweet m3 and get it cheap!" It doesn't work like that and the market is plenty big. it's WAY WAY more than half a dozen savvy internet guys. If the price even moves 3-5k under the true market value of a car, guys who make a living flipping craigslist cars would absolutely come out of the woodwork.

Probably like $85-100k. I've found that people buying cars like that aren't exactly part of the elite in society. They're more like wannabe type folks.
You guys need to remember that most luxury cars are leased, which makes them easy to acquire for anyone making over $75k a yr.

Lease payment is 700 a month so probably around 120k and even that’s prob too high.
I know people making 40k a year who lease three series.

You have to be dumb and rich enough to pay for performance you will rarely if ever use.
The 340 is all the power you'd need and is a lot cheaper.
