Just like everyone respects the M3 as a good all around car. There are certainly much better cars, but there are definitely a lot worse cars and the popularity isn't without reason

I appreciate your logic. But as an aesthetic matter, Rolex is ugly and over-the-top in the same way as a Cadillac CTS-V with a 6.2L V8 and 640 hp, magnetic ride control, and high quality seats. Many generations of M3 were elegant and tasteful.

One of the reasons I’m a big Rolex fan is that despite being great watches and super accurate, they are so durable and versatile. Most nice watches aren’t durable and most durable watches you’d wear can’t be worn in nearly any situation. Rolex made it socially acceptable to wear a dive watch with a suit.

My Tudor GMT gets consistent -1s a day and my vintage datejust survives lots of rough daily wear/water exposure yet I can wear it with anything. My omegas have been much more finicky, and I don’t have and AP/Patel yet, but the Genta-designed watches I want from their lineups are famous for being very fragile.

and the IWC Ingenieur. Thoughts on the Octo Finissimo? Bulgari bought Genta's label and the Octo is clearly Genta inspired. Also DAT 100m water resistance and extreme thinness.

MSRP is 12, I think can prob cop for 9-10 from an AD. I don't see how the 5711 or the RO are "better." The RO only has 5bar water resistance and the 5711 doesn't even hack seconds (LJL). It seems those two at double+ the price are only "better" at signaling to people that you paid 20+k for the watch. Give me the 10bar water resistance and ultra slim case of the Octo any day.

The RO market is utter retardation right now. Grey market is +50% of MSRP. AP also has a ton of gates to prevent you from buying at retail.

The Octo is shamefully being ignored by a bunch of dickriders in the watch community. They are shunning great watches to slob on AP/PP/VC/Rolexes knob.

The watch community is mostly dickriders who pretend to be into watches but really just want to wealth signal. There is no other explanation for the insanity around Prolex. I hope they keep shunning the Octo. I want to pick one up in the next 6 months or so and would love to be able to get it under MSRP.

I have Rolex in my fairly extensive collection. They get almost no wrist time. It's the one "luxury" watch brand proles know, so it sends a message and makes it more likely to be stolen. A lot of their models either don't look great or aren't very interesting from a technical perspective. The "classic" 36mm datejust looks clownishly small on my BUFF as FUCK wrists. It's a pretty good watch maker with superlative marketing that strivers and followers have driven to a level well above where it should be. The even poorer strivers who want Prolex but can't afford it are now chimping out over Tudors and driving those TTTs through the roof as well. Most of these watch people are NPC with shitty taste.

The Tudor GMT is a great watch. I prefer it strongly over my submariner.

Also if you think 36mm is too small of a watch, that's a big time prole tell.

I don't think it's objectively too small of a watch but when you have 7.5+ inch wrists it looks like a woman's watch. I still have watches as small as 32mm, but at a certain point they look weird. Still would never cop a DJ 41 as that's LJL. Tudors and Subs are both lame.
