Bear stearns failed, lehman failed, Merrill Lynch failed, AIG appeared to be failing, JP Morgan and Goldman faced rumors. Those were facts and when you turned on the news the media made it sound worse. Kind of hard for the average person to figure out that if they held on they would earn back their holdings. And even so 8 years seems like a long time to people.
