There is no cr strategy to make money on the track. But for each race I like to pick:

One horse to win

Two exacta boxes (lot of ppl like combing one favorite with one long shot)

One trifecta box

Don’t blow your load on the first couple races. Even it out, and plan to make a big bet on the last race. So if 8 races and you were planning on betting around $500, go $50 on each of the first 7 races, then $150 at the last race.

The house edge at the racetrack is incredibly high--generally in the 20% range. Compare that to casino games--e.g., playing perfect basic strategy at blackjack results in a house edge of around 0.5% (varying slightly based on the rules of the particular BJ game re doubling, splitting, # of decks, etc.). Double-0 roulette is considered the worst table game in the house, and its house edge is ~5%. Horse racing is quadruple that, so it's going to be hard to win in the long run.

That said, there are some people who win at the track. Those guys are generally really good handicappers who grind it out and can spot instances where the odds are favorable (like sharp sports bettors do).

Here's a good writeup on race betting generally, but it doesn't really discuss strategy, as Shackleford isn't much of a horse bettor: https://wizardofodds.com/games/racetrack-betting/
