"The Brooklyn Rail's Scott Beauchamp proposes a parallel between punk's "No Future" stance and its active "raw energy of dissatisfaction" deriving from the historical lineage of Dada dystopia, and vaporwave's preoccupation with "political failure and social anomie".[40] Vaporwave's stance is more focused on loss, the notion of lassitude, and passive acquiescence.[40] Beauchamp writes that "vaporwave was the first musical genre to live its entire life from birth to death completely online".[40] Cultural theorist Dominic Pettman, professor of Culture and Media at the New School for Social Research, notes that the internet causes users to have micro-experiences of "hypermodulation".[41] Beauchamp suggests that expressions of hypermodulation inspired both the development and downfall of vaporwave.[40]"

I rate it as close but inexact. Loss and lassitude? Yes, but also "saudade," as the Brazilians call it. Vaporwave is more nuanced and, I think, appreciated on a certain subconscious level by a very slim cohort: UMC types in their late 20s and 30s that grew up in suburban America. The frequencies, timing, and sounds draw on the nostalgia of that brief period of Pax Americana in the 80s and 90s marked by shopping malls, arcades, bike rides, and playing in the street. It's that slice of time that feels warm and friendly -- after all, it fits snugly between the anxiety of the Cold War and the Post 9/11, smart phone, #MeToo hellscape in which we now find ourselves. At least we find ourselves here physically. For those of us who came of age as young people in that golden time, it lets us return mentally, even if only for the brief fleeting moment that the scratchy synths let us believe we're breathing that 1996 amrbrosia-air, riding bikes home from the mall to watch the Simpsons. You know?

Hey ! We don't want any negative vibes in here !!! As we mentioned before, Vaporwave is a huge JOKE. We don't even consider it as a musical style. It 's an hipster thing created by 20 years old teenagers who don't know anything about music. It basically consist of sampling an 80' s funk classic and slowing it down. This vaporwave stuff will disappear as quicly as it came, You won't hear about it in 2 years times.

the "vaporwave art" is just as striking to me as the music. the pink filters over everything really call to mind the phrase "rose-colored glasses"
