I rate it as close but inexact. Loss and lassitude? Yes, but also "saudade," as the Brazilians call it. Vaporwave is more nuanced and, I think, appreciated on a certain subconscious level by a very slim cohort: UMC types in their late 20s and 30s that grew up in suburban America. The frequencies, timing, and sounds draw on the nostalgia of that brief period of Pax Americana in the 80s and 90s marked by shopping malls, arcades, bike rides, and playing in the street. It's that slice of time that feels warm and friendly -- after all, it fits snugly between the anxiety of the Cold War and the Post 9/11, smart phone, #MeToo hellscape in which we now find ourselves. At least we find ourselves here physically. For those of us who came of age as young people in that golden time, it lets us return mentally, even if only for the brief fleeting moment that the scratchy synths let us believe we're breathing that 1996 amrbrosia-air, riding bikes home from the mall to watch the Simpsons. You know?
