so, us sports tv coverage is basically entirely manufactured around SELLING A NARRATIVE, and the entire thing falls apart because the media cant control the narrative with live sports and anything can happen

I've poasted ad nauseum on xo about how American sports fans don't like sports -- they like celebrity and events and winning.

Funnily enough I was thinking about making a thread about how I've found I specifically dislike the narratives because it gives me rooting interest, and then I end up disappointed. My favorite events are the ones where I don't have a rooting interest because I can just watch the competition.

I don't know how any sports fan can't find something they like during the Olympics. The breadth of offerings is staggering.

But maybe you just equate boring with "not popular", in which case you're basically a woman.

Let me guess, favorite sports are football, baseball, golf, etc? All the really popular ones here?

Yes, because it's what I grew up playing and watching. Not sure how that negates my point.

The reason people find them boring is irrelevant. Your point was that "American sports fans don't like sports -- they like celebrity and events and winning."

I don't think that's true. They just don't like olympic sports.

"Despite surface appearances to the contrary, the consumer age is deathly boring. Boredom is caused, not because an activity is inherently boring, but because it is not meaningful to the person. Since the life of the consumer revolves around the overkill of meaningless manufactured low-level material desires, it is quickly engulfed by boredom, as well as jadedness, ennui and discontent."

https://newint.org/columns/essays/2016/04/01/psycho-spiritual-crisis/

i.e., you basically let mass media dictate to you what you like. no sport is inherently more boring than another. luge is not inherently more boring than sprinting in track.

tbf olympians have been forcememed from the beginning of the olympics. you have to have stars to get attention. random "sports" for the sake of sports died when ABC Wide World of Sports died. there's just too many other options now.

also, the people being forcememed used to be good. when NBC hypes up an athlete for months and then that person fails to even make the finals for their sport, that's not great for the athlete or for nbc

but not as much. and it will get worse as they get more competitive.

we are still very very good at alpine skiing, though a bit of an off year with the men as bode has retired and ted ligety is about to. the women are still pretty good.

hockey offers a single men's medal and we're in the finals for the women.

figure skating we have been very very good the last 20 years.

i agree that we have taken a huge hit in speed skating, but we have made a lot of gains in xc skiing and nordic combined.

if Papua New Guinea brought the TV ratings that the US and Canada do, perhaps we can adjust event starts to their primetime

the Olympics and the World Cup should pretty much only take place in the US, Canada, and western Europe for this reason, but that's a different discussion.

What I have a problem with is when they specifically change up athletes' preparations solely for TV ratings. They are then making competition-level decisions for $$/ratings.

prime time ratings $$. that's proving my point.

and yes, but competitions are always at night

they did the same thing with biathalon -- NBC asked that it be held at night so they could show it in the morning, nevermind that its colder and windier and harder to shoot at night.

the US figure skating championships largely took place in the morning and the afternoon. yes, they were in California this year, but this is not atypical. there's too many fucking events and heats and stages to have them all in the evening.

i love tennis as a sport, but i'm not exactly a supporter of what the US Open does. If you've read our threads on the USO, you'll note we have all been critical of decisions made by the USTA, including scheduling, demolishing historical stadiums, and creating a stadium (Arthur Ashe) that is so big it sucks for fans.

i don't know when every skating event is held. i'm just telling you what i read regarding the pull of NBC. i don't think it's kosher for a network to dictate when events are held.
