Hundreds of workers employed by the city of Boston made more than $200,000 last year, according to newly released payroll information.

The city of Boston released its 2017 employee earnings report this month, showing payroll information for the more than 22,000 people who worked for the city.

Members of the Boston Police Department again top the list, 10 of whom earned more than $300,000.

Haseeb Hosein was the highest earner on the city's payroll, receiving $366,232.65 in 2017.

Hosein was promoted to the rank of captain in 2014, the first Muslim captain in the department.

With a salary of $146,893.76, Hosein doubled his earnings through working overtime ($62,696.50) and detail pay ($106,980) last year. He also received $27,542.71 through the Police Career Incentive Pay Program and $22,119.68 in unclassified earnings.

He was one of many members of the department to receive a boost to their earnings through overtime and detail pay.

The department paid $66.9 million in overtime last year -- a jump of nearly six million over 2016 - an amount city officials attribute to large public gatherings in the city, such as the "Free Speech" rally and Women's March on the Boston Common.

"The City of Boston has made fiscal responsibility and smart spending a priority, and continues to ensure that we carefully manage both our personnel numbers and overtime each calendar year," Boston Chief Financial Officer Emme Handy said, adding that there "were a significant number of unplanned protests, large gatherings and celebrations" last year.

"Our first priority is keeping the public safe," Mayor Marty Walsh told the Boston Herald, of the overtime costs. "I mean, obviously, I'd love to see the overtime costs way down, but we have to keep the public safe and we can't do anything about free speech. If people want to protest and rally, it's our responsibility to keep them safe. We saw what happened in Charlottesville. We don't want a situation like that to happen in Boston."

Walsh made $175,000 in 2017.

That's not including cop pension and probably all the cash-related drug money and drug value you get to confiscate.

Being a cop is probably an all-in $200k+ paying job even as a low level Sergeant.

Most of your gig is filling out paperwork and getting free food when you stop by your favorite Deli to say hello.
