i'll read any well-written biography, more or less. of anyone. doesn't matter what field the person was in or what kind of life s/he led.

this is my favorite literary form.

i think the 'Individual Life' is the lens best suited to making all things intelligible. you learn more about history/history of ideas/psychology, everything, by seeing them refracted through the prism of the mundane Individual Life.

something to be said for this, that's for sure.

I also like biographies of artists bc it has all of this stuff as well as criticism/interpretation.

Joyce by Ellman is excellent example here

i agree but only autobiographies. biographies have too much of the writer's dumb perspective in them. i want to understand the thinking process of the person i'm reading about

im almost finished with john paul getty's autobiography. its pretty illuminating on how the guy thinks

I think avoiding fiction is a defensible idea. Much fiction is poorly written, and the entire premise of fiction is suspect.

There is a fundamental problem with fiction. The life lessons learned from reading fiction may be maladaptive. Many of our most reknown fiction authors have been misfits or outright degenerates. The imaginary world they create, and invite us to become a part of, often does not comport with reality and makes the reader less well equipped to deal with reality.
