I can think of a few reasons. It's a place to develop skills that can transfer elsewhere. It's a more interesting place to live than most small towns.

You're sticking to your assumption that DC has nothing interesting to offer. That's just not true. I'm drawn there because I do have a hardon for government-related work, but it's objectively an interesting place.

There are jobs where being able to start right away is an advantage. If he doesn't have that many possessions, he could potentially get everything ready for a move and start applying as though he already lives in D.C. Then he could move immediately if he gets a job. How plausible that is depends on his circumstances but a single guy 1 year out of school is as good a candidate as any.

If you do find a private sector job, it will be related to and dependent on the federal govt.

You will not develop skills transferable to other cities or industries.

Your nest egg will deplete and you will be stuck in a mediocre govt contracting job.

Before you know it, 15 years will have passed and youll be in the same place and a worse financial position than when you started.

Know a few people in similar situation

DC shouldn’t be on the table at all unless job lined up

Only markets I’d look into right now for housing+ jerb + COL for young guy are:

Houston

Tampa/Orlando

Charlotte/Raleigh

Nashville

Portland OR

Salt Lake City

Milwaukee

Columbus

Dallas/FtW

OKC

Greenville

DC is 100% at the bottom of the list

Every where else is a crapshoot and likely unsustainable

i sympathize with your sentiment. there is more opportunity in big cities, which is why most posters live in them.

think about what you want out of the next ten years though. i wish i had when i was younger. I moved to a big city (NYC/LA/DC/CHI) from true flyover, without a job, as soon as a i graduated college. There was in fact more opportunity there and i dont regret the move. but i let some friendships and connections whither and i wish i wouldnt have. so keep those up, but if you have to make a move, make the move. you are a man and will be expected to make money and find opportunity.

DC is not a bad town, depending on what you want to do. I would recommend moving to the nearest large city that is still close to your family, so that you can visit them regularly, which you should.
