I have a buddy with massive family wealth and a super successful family business who recently bought a $4.5mm house. It's huge but no shit probably more than 1/2 of the interior space is bedrooms.
Oh well.

My parents have a 6,300 sq/ft house and my house is 3,400 sq/ft. I've lived in both. There is no appreciable difference once you have a certain amount of room. If both homes are equally nice, the happiness difference is non-existent once you get over the first few months of excitement having a huge house. I have enough bedrooms for my kids, my office, my pool table, my backyard, and my game room.
Having an extra 3k sq/ft or more would make zero difference. Plus the cost of heating and maintaining that space would be tremendous. I almost bought a 5,000 sq/ft house in my neighborhood until I relized I didn't need the extra room, and my heating, cooling, and gardening costs would be double.
He would have been better spending 2 mil and investing 4.5 mil into passive income.

100% CR
I live in ARE COUNTRY, married, no kids, two small dogs. Copped a 2100 sqft house walking distance to bars and restaurants. I struggled to use all the space I have now, and entertain people every week to justify it. My next house will be smaller and more modern.
Tl;dr: don’t buy for your neighbors, buy for yourself.
