About 1- compensation and 2- promotion.
Been here at company for 6 years. Told when I started that I'd be eligible for a promotion around year 5. Last year, my boss said I'd be getting more administrative responsibilities similar to someone in that position. But when I pushed for the official promotion, boss said that it was a tough time politically to push a promotion through. So here I am a year later, still in the dark about their intentions - whether to promote me or not.
Also my comp is behind my peers - prob by 20-30k. I know this by picking up on conversations with other folks.
Honestly I find it scary to directly bring up these topics at annual reviews. Usually in these reviews, I get told that I'm doing a great job, that I was rated a "x", that my bonus will be "y" and that my new comp will be "z". I've never had the courage to ask the more tough questions- such as where they see me fitting into the legal dept in the next few years, or anything else to really push my own agenda forward
Any suggestions would be helpfil

If not flame you’re doing it wrong. If flame, terrible flame.
Go ask for promotion again with your value at your fingertips. If political pushback, you say, when I undertook this assignment and was given a 5 year window (way too long so I know flame) there was no mention of politics being associated with that process. I worked hard and meet the criteria and deserve “this” promotion.
In re: to compensation- that’s a tougher nut to crack (in one shot) to make up the gap btw peers, but ask for a significant raise to be paired with promotion.

It’s ok to be scared, but you want an answer. You don’t have to leave your comfort zone in tone. But you listed your exact gripes. And that’s fair and it’s more rewarding for your mental health to ask then not.
Think back to a time when something seemed difficult and when you were in the other side of it, you kicked yourself for dragging your feet.
If you have another offer great, but I don’t bluff.
